Starter motor keeps going

I've got a problem which I'm sure someone has had before...


Firstly the battery was quite flat, not enough to start it (K75).  So I used the jump leads and jumped off the van battery.   It now starts but the starter motor keeps going even when I removed the key.  I had to disconnect the pos from the batt to make it stop.


Any ideas?

Starter relay has fused the contacts trying to start with a low battery.

Thanks Jim, just spotted the thread about welded relay contacts.

one of the cardinal brick rules.....NEVER try to start them on a low battery.

I have blown out the side of the battery due to the relay points fusing. I have now fitted a battery isolator switch into the earth lead, it has multiple uses.

I checked the continuity of the relay and, as expected, it was short circuit.  As i removed it,  the fault cleared itself.  The relay had insulting tape around it so it's not the first time it's gone doolally.

BTW.  I've just rebuilt my Honda 400four engine, back in the frame,  carbs synced and MOT next sat.
