Side to side play in final drive / pivot adjustment question
« on: April 15, 2017, 04:34:01 PM »
1993 K1100LT 143,000 miles.  In the middle of re-assembling my final drive after a spline lube. Right now it is dry (no gear oil inside).  If I hold either side of the disc break I can rock it back and forth a little.  I put a dial indicator on the outer edge of the disc, it's about .030 of play.

Normal?   Normal wear?  Or a potential trouble spot?  Otherwise it is fine.  I'm getting ready for a big trip this summer (Trans Labrador Highway) so everything is getting the once over, and I'm a little more paranoid than usual.

Also, standard procedure is to tighten the left side (inboard) bolt (the big one) all the way flush, and then tighten the outboard side until snug and use the locking nut to hold in place? This is what I usually do, but the rubber boot is *awfullly* close to the disc.  Seems like the whole thing should be shifted over a smidge....

There should be absolutely NO play. You need to establish whether it is the crown FD wheel bearing or the pivot pins that are the cause of the movement. I would start with the pivot pins as these are straight forward to set with a torque wrench. Just 'nipping them up' is not good enough so invest in a small 1/4 inch quality torque wrench. If the play still remains it is likely the crown wheel bearing in the FD. To check this ask a friend to rotate the wheel while you hold a large screw driver with the pointy bit on the other edge of the FD and the handle against your ear. If the bearing is worn you will hear quite a rumbling sound through the handle of the screw driver.
