Oily Incontinence
« on: March 04, 2017, 01:13:58 PM »
OK a K75S, a 1987, at least 98K miles (when the odo stopped working yrs ago)  I noticed a drip of oil from the water/oil pump tell tale drain.
I went for a reconditioned pump from Motorworks in Yorkshire.

Installation without a problem, yesterday. Left 24hrs to let sealant do it's thing.

Today, put fluids back into bike , it fired up...............to my horror oil was simply pissing out of the tell tale drain, not a drip a stream.

NOT when bike running of oddly only when I switched off

Not well pleased, however let it run to see if it would need to bed in/settle in.

And lo, after a wee while it did, after losing about 100mls or so of oil.

Stopped bike and topped up to the dot, bloody thing started to piss oil again, bike NOT running.

Start the bike, the leak stops, stop the bike it starts to leak UNTIL the level disappears from the sight glass window, then it stops.

200 pounds for a reconned pump and it leaks :(

BUT I am intrigued that it leaks only when engine stops and only until level drops to below the sight glass.

Now , have Motorworks  neglected install the oil seal, or is it badly installed ?

OR, could it be the o ring on the smaller toothed gear wheel ???

OR something else, any help very much appreciated, Johnny Scotland

PS this is not the same bike that had the water in the tank problem recently

There's not much to correctly bolting up a rebuilt pump. You should take this up with Motorworks next time they are open. You might have gotten a dud with a poorly installed shaft seal; that's entirely likely.

Hi Thanks for the reply. Aye i will come Monday morning.

The odd thing is that no oil leaks when engine is running, only when stopped.

AND that the leak, flow is a better description TBH, stops when the level in the sump/sight glass drops to a level approx = to 100-150mls of oil.

I tried NOT to block the return channel to the sump (wee half moon channel), but I may have, but can't predict how this would make itself known by a leak out the tell tale, mmhhhh

Also would a back to front oil seal on the shaft not leak ALL the time, even when engine running ???  I dunno :)

ho hum !!!   Johnny

That's the approach, right there. Think about something else. I'm fairly certain this will all get sorted with Motorworks.

I would guess there is suckage when running, and blowage when stopped ...

OK, I have a bunch of milk crates hanging off the roof above the mezzanine. They are full of: spare parts & dead parts; metalworking good scraps; leather good scraps; computer cables; assorted junk; etc. And then there's one, second from the end, full of hoses, clamps, and misc fitting for the Gast vaccuum pump and the 7.5hp IR compressor ... labeled Suck & Blow.
