can someone help me distinguish between 8v and 16v

Hi guys, I need some clarification on this. All of my research has led me to believe that the K75 motor is 8v however I still don't understand any of this. Can someone tell me if my '94 k75 is 8 or 16 or what because the more that I did the more lost I just get. Thank you any help is appreciated.

Ahhhhh...you are beyond lost. 

all k75's are 6v.

K100 had early 8v and late 16v.

The V stands for valve.   As in the number of them in the cylinder head.   K75 has two valve per cylinder X 3 cylinder = 6v.

Some links to the research that led you to that conclusion about the K75 would be interesting, Devil K. It's no wonder that you're confused.

In addition to Marshall's explanation, 8V engines are also described as 2v; 16v engines are also described as 4v. It's all part of tribal code.

That's cause there's only one valve configuration with the K75.

I was confused thinking you were talking about volts.  On the other hand, a 3 cylinder 12 volt and  4 valve K90 would have been awesome.  Too bad BMW went other directions.

I wished they had pursued the 3 cylinders and made a 900cc bike. 2v 0r 4v doesn't matter, would have been truly awesome.

To avoid this confusion over the number of cylinders versus the number of valves, I just refer to K bikes as either "2 valve", or "4 valve" engines. That is, I only refer to the number of valves for each cylinder.

If it's a k75 (of course with three cylinders), then it is a 2 valve engine (with a total of 6 valves).

I guess it depends on what you feel like counting. The total number of valves, or the valves per cylinder. I prefer the latter.
