Fuel Sending Unit and Tank Pad Adhesive
« on: February 01, 2015, 10:08:49 AM »
Hi all,
Does anyone know where to source a new fuel sender unit for an '86 K100RT? Mine is rusty as hell and thought I'd change it out while I'm at everything else. Also, the rear tank pad came off. The factory adhesive had turned to slime. What have others used to re-attach this thing/ knee pads, etc.?

Much appreciated!

Hi Brad-Man,
I appreciate the reply. I absolutely figured that but thought there might be someone out there with a salvageable part for less than $131. In fact I am going to try to re-wire the damaged part. It's worth a shot. It's very fine angel hair type wire. Not sure if I'll be able to source it or not.

The fuel sender guy wouldn't get back to me and it's gone. I now have a New York address I could have had it shipped to....c'est la vie. I'll keep shopping or maintain my efforts to repair the one I have.

Thanks so much. This is quite a community of good people!!

Just remember the bulk of that unit is to send a signal to a fuel gauge most bikes don't have, the other option is to trigger the low fuel light and to get power and ground to the fuel pump.  The first two well one can live without, the last is required to operate.   So one can make do.

Thanks for your note. Yes, I am aware of the functionality of the total unit. In a pinch I'm good with no fuel guage for a period. I'll get there eventually.

I appreciate your comment.

Even though your current fuel sender may look rusted and horrid, it probably is still functional.  Refer to my page on Messing with the In-tank Fuel Sender to see how you can renovate it.  The one I used for the photos was pretty bad but it still functioned.

Hi RBM, I'm afraid I pooched the fines wires not realizing there were wires under all the gunk. Can I still use it by flipping the board as you've indicated or wouldn't the electrics work at that point?

Thanks,
Kris

Unfortunately, no.  Once damaged, that resistor cannot be repaired and is trash.  Continue your search.  I found a sender from Germany at a good price last year; search for "Kraftstoffmesser Benzinstandgeber".  Here's one I just found:

Hey Brad-man, thanks for checking into it. What would you be asking for this unit?

Thanks,
Chris
