1985 K100 Floods and Sputters
« on: January 03, 2015, 10:30:05 AM »
Happy New Year folks! I am looking at an '85 K100. The owner says the bike has been sitting for 4 years. It does run (somewhat) but floods and sputters. The only thing he did was put in a new battery and spark plugs. Arthritis in his hip has taken him out of the game, unfortunately. Any thoughts or hints on this one?

Thanks!

Setting for 4yrs, the 1st thing that comes to mind that could cause flooding would be sticking injectors, or a pressure regulator that isn't regulating anymore.

Thanks Scott. Is the regulator expensive to replace or repair?

One more question, Scott, if you don't mind. Can the FPR be cleaned/ serviced at all or is it a question of being "done" once it malfunctions?

Thanks

Is it trying to run with four-year-old gas? That might be your problem.

id remover the fuel cap... empty the tank... look to see if the pump rubber is good... if so... id put 2 gallons of no corn ethyl in there... if it starts... id put a whole bottle of chevron techron in the tank and ride it hard for 40 miles... then top off the tank with no corn ethyl with another bottle of chevron with techron in the tank...

i betts it will be purring like a tight pussy within the next 200 miles...

Have you checked all the rubber bits(breather hose, throttle bushings, etc.) for cracks.  A vacuum leak will make it run like crap.  Has a mouse taken up living in your air cleaner?  It happened to my wife's car, busy little bugger dragged a lot of grass and what not into the breather box.  Turned it into a rather nice little mouse condo.

Then do the fuel change and system clean up.

Thank you, gentlemen. I'll see how it pans out. This guy is describing his machine as a "frankenbike" so I've lost a little interest in it. Turn signal not working, bits and pieces construction....not quite what I had in mind. Then the guy says he'll part it out if it doesn't sell. That alone made me want to rescue the damn thing!!

ya, I would go for it anyway. I had a problem like that when I ran my k 100rs (85, btw) out or very nearly out of gas. replace the fuel filter ( it is in the tank). and check all those goofy hoses under and around the air box.  I ran sea foam through mine ( thru the gas tank) and it finally cleared itself up. make sure you have a good battery in it and if youre not sure, take the old one to a batteries plus store. they will check it for no charge. I don't work for them, but I have their "top line" battery in all my bikes and have never had a problem. these bikes seem especially sensitive to low voltage...probly has to do with the old f.i. systems. just a thought and not necessarily right.   good luck!
