Fork seals - but what else?
« on: December 24, 2014, 06:00:50 PM »
Right side fork damaged in transit (leaking) so planning to replace seals/fluid both sides (main seals ordered) - but thinking about what else might be required / recommended ? I'm not familiar with the Showa shock (yet) but Haynes manual says that both lower sealing washers (#22 and 25 in diag - presumably aluminium crush) should be replaced - but what about the upper O rings (#3 and 5) ? I will be able to inspect bushings etc once everything is apart.

Bike has ~64k miles and do not know if PO's have done any fork maintenance - so am assuming not. Any experience / recommendations / tips from those that may have serviced the Showa would be very much appreciated.

I suppose it depends on how they look when you remove them, but I'd suggest the brass bushings. #14 and #20. As they wear, it will allow excess movement and can allow the seals to leak oil.

was chronic leaker... when i replaced 14 and 20 i never had a leaker again... at least not a leaker that needed more than a seal mate...
