Looking to update the old filters, which is overdue.
FUEL FILTERThere's a Liberry post
here that references the Fram and NAPA fuel filters that can be used as an alternative to the BMW fuel filter. Well, I've got questions about both.
The Fram filter appears to have been discontinued, at least that's what I get at the local parts places when I called. The parts stores offered me an alternative that's supposed to match, a GK Industries FG800, which appears to be produced by a small Toronto-area company. I don't know about the quality of these having no experience of them and not finding any reviews online. No idea about fuel pressure rating. I mean, I would assume it's the same if it's being suggested as an alternative part, but I don't like to make assumptions, especially since I only have the parts counter guy's word on that.
Alternatively there's the NAPA filter. There aren't many NAPA locations here, but I called them up and they seemed confused. The 3032 model wasn't listed for a 1996 4.6L Mustang. Instead they had a 3097 listed for that car.
They weren't able to look up the fuel pressure ratings, but they gave me the following differences:
NAPA 3032 - 1.9" diameter (20 micron filter size)
NAPA 3097 - 3" diameter (10 micron filter size)
Same fitting size for both, 5/16".
I assume the 3032 is the correct one, but I just want to make sure? And has anyone ever used or even heard of GK industries products? These are all well under $10, so cost is essentially irrelevant.
AIR FILTERThe air filter has always seemed very durable to me, good for long use so long as it's cleaned out. Replacement seems to be recommended for every 15,000 kms, but I'm on the same air filter I've had since I got the bike 30,000 kms and seven years ago and haven't had any trouble just pulling it out and force blowing it with compressed air. That said, I'm sure I'm overdue for a proper replacement.
Can you do a more substantial cleaning or refurbish of the BMW air filter? I was thinking of getting a second one and the swapping/cleaning them as needed, if this is possible, since they're not cheap and I'm sure BMW will discontinue them eventually.
Thanks!
