a couple of filter questions
« on: January 31, 2014, 04:41:59 PM »
Looking to update the old filters, which is overdue.

FUEL FILTER

There's a Liberry post here that references the Fram and NAPA fuel filters that can be used as an alternative to the BMW fuel filter. Well, I've got questions about both.

The Fram filter appears to have been discontinued, at least that's what I get at the local parts places when I called. The parts stores offered me an alternative that's supposed to match, a GK Industries FG800, which appears to be produced by a small Toronto-area company. I don't know about the quality of these having no experience of them and not finding any reviews online. No idea about fuel pressure rating. I mean, I would assume it's the same if it's being suggested as an alternative part, but I don't like to make assumptions, especially since I only have the parts counter guy's word on that.

Alternatively there's the NAPA filter. There aren't many NAPA locations here, but I called them up and they seemed confused. The 3032 model wasn't listed for a 1996 4.6L Mustang. Instead they had a 3097 listed for that car.

They weren't able to look up the fuel pressure ratings, but they gave me the following differences:

NAPA 3032 - 1.9" diameter (20 micron filter size)
NAPA 3097 - 3" diameter (10 micron filter size)

Same fitting size for both, 5/16".

I assume the 3032 is the correct one, but I just want to make sure? And has anyone ever used or even heard of GK industries products? These are all well under $10, so cost is essentially irrelevant.

AIR FILTER

The air filter has always seemed very durable to me, good for long use so long as it's cleaned out. Replacement seems to be recommended for every 15,000 kms, but I'm on the same air filter I've had since I got the bike 30,000 kms and seven years ago and haven't had any trouble just pulling it out and force blowing it with compressed air. That said, I'm sure I'm overdue for a proper replacement.

Can you do a more substantial cleaning or refurbish of the BMW air filter? I was thinking of getting a second one and the swapping/cleaning them as needed, if this is possible, since they're not cheap and I'm sure BMW will discontinue them eventually.

Thanks!

usa napa has had them evertime i asked... and not just in metro areas... even the little town napa stores...

napa gold 3032 link... http://m.napaonline.com/Tablet/parts/PartDetails.aspx?Id=FIL3032_0297051232

napa gold 3032 specs link... http://m.ebay.com/itm/271111389498?cmd=VIDESC

i changed my air filter after 60 thousand miles and it looked like it coukd go another 60 thou...

so... i wouldnt worry about replacing the air filter till 80 or 100 thou...

butts i would replace the fuel filter every 10 thou... clogged fuel filters will f up your heap abouts as fast as anything...

Just to muddy the water, I used a 3097 in the RS I traded last year.

an exact replacement for the air filter for less money is the Mahle LX75.  Beemer Boneyard has them, I found one on Amazon.  But as mentioned, they hardly ever need to be replaced.

The local NAPA does have the fuel filter; the problem was more that there aren't too many NAPA locations here. But it's not a really hard to get to or anything - I just figured I'd rather walk four blocks rather than going across town.  ;)

The bigger issue with the NAPA was to make sure I got the right filter. I'm glad the 3032 seems to be more correct since it's a good deal smaller. Changing that filter is definitely overdue!

Thanks for the Mahle tips too, though Motobins actually has stock air filters (after conversion) for even less than the Mahles on Beemer Boneyard.

I actually don't know how old the air filter is, since it's the one the bike had when I got it and the bike's closing in on the first 100k, so I've been thinking of at least buying a spare even if the current one looks pretty clean. Is there anything to look for on the air filter that really shows it's time to replace it?

Oil filters I just get cheaply locally. The Quaker State QS3614 has always worked just fine for me.

worked for napa 12 years, the 3032 is a generic small filter while the 3097 is ford vehicle specific.

Hold it up to the light and see how translucent it is.  (Very subjective call).
