pulled that tranny
« on: May 09, 2013, 01:04:37 PM »
Ok... finally got the tranny out and i am concerned about a couple of things.. 1/ the front drive spline was RUSTY!!!!, is this a concern and should i be glad i have a chance to lube it up good and proceed on... 2/ there is black oily residue below the clutch pack on the bellhousing and a slight glaze on the the front facing of the tranny... is this where the clutch pack o ring comes into play and it needs to be replace to prevent oily blow by? i am assuming this but i need advice from the experts. Also should i pull the clutch pack apart and inspect at this time?  any other maint items since i am this far in? Thanks in advance everyone! jeff

it's probably not rust.  The lube used before by BMW dries to a red rusty color.  Mine looked like that too.  I just sprayed some brake cleaner and wiped it off.  The spline underneth was perfectly fine and skiny black.

I replaced my main seal for the same reason last summer. Also taking my transmission out because I should've replaced the seals in it, while I was down there. Lesson learned!

I had the same findings on the inside clutch housing.  Retrospectively, I know it's only the O ring that was leaking and not the RMS.  Don from BMWMOA advised that I leave it alone and I should have listened because replacing the RMS took 3 tries ($37 each) and one very expensive ($90) block of BMW plastic to get the lip right.

But I can totally understand the urge to change the seals, because that's exactly what I did.

ok.... now im confused. I am not what sure what seals i should be replacing and which ones i should be leaving alone.. :dunno  LOL. Anyway. So far i have heard
" clutch nut o ring" and main seal. I dont think it is normal that i should have quite a bit of oily residue inside this bellhousing but hey maybe i should leave it alone and deal with the grub screw and hang it back together? Any advice appreciated>

The oil is probably leaking past the old O-ring although it could be a leaky rear main seal.

Read up on removing the clutch pack so you know the simple yet important procedure and then mark and remove the clutch pack. Don't plan to mark it after you remove it as the springs holding it together could make it instantly spring apart on your floor once you unscrew it.

The O-ring behind that is simple and cheap to R+R. You should R+R the 6 clutch pack screws too.

If there's play in your foot shifter, this is a good time to tackle that too.

There are seals on both ends of the transmission too, but if they're not leaking most will suggest leaving them alone.
