What happened???????
« on: April 01, 2013, 07:43:04 AM »
I have an 85 K100RT with about 25Kmi on it. ran fine at end of last season.
I decided to pull the fuel injectors and have them professionally cleaned.
I also replaced the plugs with the proper NGK plug.
Everything went ok on reassembly and the bike started right away and idled fine.
I had only less than a gallon of fuel in the tank as I knew I had to remove it for the work.

Once all done I got on it and went the mile to the local gas station. Bike was running fine.
Good power and smooth.

I filled the tank (4.3 gallons of MOBIL fuel)) and the bike started right up.
I pulled out of the station and stopped at the traffic light for about 30 seconds.

When the light went green and I started to accellerate, the bike just stopped.
Motor shut down.
All indications on the instruments were good and the starter cranked but not one pop from the engine.

Battery had lots of juice and starter turned well but no running of the engine.

I had to push it the mile back home. (very embarrassing)

Any ideas or suggestions.
I find it hard to believe that the gas was bad. But it's a possibility.

When my fuel pump went it went "just like that".  I was a block up the street, and it just died at the stop sign.

I got lucky, the stop sign was at the top of a hill, so I was able to turn around and coast back home.

The screen, pump and surround in mine were shot from age (and supposedly ethanol).

I also replaced the in tank and outside hoses.

The power connector to the fuel pump (the plug clipped to the tool box over the battery, on my K75) can also lose contact. If no power to the fuel pump (listen for its characteristic whine when starting), then either this connector or the pass-through in the already-referenced fuel level sensor is the likely culprit.

Also check fuel injector and computer electrical connections, as this is where you last worked on stuff.

Re: What happened??????? (FOUND THE FIX)

In keeping with my philosophy of: "Always start with the easy stuff", I found the problem.

It seems that in my maintenance of the bike I had to remove and reseat the plug
on the bottom of the tank that supplies power to the fuel pump.

One of the 4 female pins has become recessed farther than the other 3. Probably the ground.

I carefully pushed it back up and slightly crimped all 4 pins. Then I used DIOXIT, a chemical that removes oxidation and coats the pins against any more corrosion. The plug seated in firmly and the motor sprang to life with a musical beauty.

Life is good!!!!

But one more problem and I'm going back to my favorite. The good old R75/7.
Love the K bike but I can fix that R75/7 anywhere, anytime with just basic tools.

Simplicity is also a beautiful.

How does your R75/7 hook power to the fuel pump?

AH, thats the beauty of the R75/7. It has a fuel pump called "Gravity".

Very low maintenance there!
It seems that practically every manufacturer of cars and motorcycles are bowing down and worshipping the god of high technology.

But, it comes with a high price. It's said to be more reliable, eco-friendly, etc. But when it breaks you need a computerized shop to fix it. It's OK if you ride a Harley and only go from bar to bar or to the beach once a week. But when your in the Rockies in Montana, 2500mi from home, I'll go with low tech, rider friendly, flat twins.

I've had them all From OLD R60, R75/5's , R90s, R80RT, R100RT and I do believe the R75/7 is the apex of the old flat twin BMW's. Like a good friend, it would never leave you stranded. Enough power for one rider and luggage, and just enough of everything to make a good ride.

BUT, I do like my K100RT.
