k100 gas tank repair

last fall i stripped paint from tank only to reveal some ugly repair jobs on each bottom side. Is there a good alternative to having tank rewelded or should i find a local Kansas City welding shop and see what they can do? I like to look of the bare metal polished tank with painted other parts but dont like the idea of fuel seeping out. Any advice appreciated. Jeff

I used a product sold at NAPA stores, specifically for gas tank repair.  Small kit, mix two parts together, quickly, and quickly spread on the gap/leak.  I hardens qucikly and is VERY HARD within a few minutes.  So far it is the best/only thing I have found that seals. 

I used some JB weld the year before and it began seeping after about 3 tankfuls, slight, but still a leak.  So far the NAPA stuff is holding well.  On the 10th or better tankful, 1000+ miles.

When mixed it can be spread, kinda like drywall mud, and it is a dull grey color, so against a bare tank it would look close to the same color.

It costs about $14.00 for a small package.

that sounds good bob. I guess welding it would be cost prohibitive. I could probably just get a new replacement for what it would cost to weld up the tank. Not sure but im guessing.

I ve used a product called Q bond. Go to olym@worldonline.co.za Its petrol resistant. Btw. Im in S Africa

Jeff, if it is not too bad, I would try everything prior to welding, unless you find some nut job who wants to weld Aluminum and gas.  AL is hard to weld and I could find no one to weld on a gas tank, at all.

Try a two part expoxy first.  Even if you weld it will just sluff off under the heat, so you got nothing to lose.

I used it on my '67 Volvo's tank with good results. The smaller can even says "Special motorcycle formula!" even though it's the exact same thing.

I used the Eastwood Gas tank repair stuff that you slosh around in the tank to seal leaks, mine had lots of pin holes on both sides and there was not enough metal left to weld(way too thin). I repainted the tank but polished the gas cap to a mirror finish.(looks cool)
