I need Jim Carrey from the scene in liar liar to describe everything i did wrong ending with "while following too close and over braking and using only the front brake" so pissed at myself, but at least the camera was rolling and there's both fun for all and some good what not to do training video for my fellow newbs  :dunno2: :loco:

thank you, you guys? oh, me and my mistress (the bike) camera was on a tripod, a 2up rear person holding a cam would have had a really bad day

What were you looking down at? GPS?  Whatever it was that sure was a long time to be taking your eyes off of the road for that long when city driving.

Ever heard the expression "always be planning an out?"  I think an evasive maneuver would've worked a bit better there. 

Another good reason to ride in the left (or right depending upon the situation) side of the lane.  And the center of the lane is where all the crud, often slippery, ends up.

I would've moved over to the empty left lane after that bus turned. Was thinking that watching the video before you even biffed.

Oh, well.  Not too bad of a biff. Live and learn.....

what i was looking at was planning an out, mirror, head check, I was over thinking all of it, nothing on my mind but getting as safe as I could, wanted a better lane, fewer variables, but in the city, way too many things to make sure to keep your eyes out for, newbie mistake (which i made 20 years ago when i was last a newbie, guess the decades in a cage made me forget) I figured out about half my mistakes the second i hit the pavement, the other half the first time i watched the video but in the moment, i dunno, accounting for that car stopping to go right the second my head turned just wasn't there, kicking myself for sure, I was even completely aware of the cyclist ahead of him and waited until he wasn't a variable, wishing i had a hud with a rear facing camera :)

Ok, laughing with you, not at you. #1 problem I see is situational awareness. In town traffic, I'd have never been that close to the car in front of me. Watching the vid, I was looking ahead at the bicycle and buses but from the get-go, I was thinking "awful close to that car ahead".

Good lesson learned. I too have been guilty of grabbing front brake too soon and too hard. Luckily it didn't end this way.

If you're gonna have a "learning opportunity" it may as well be a low-speed one!  I trust you're completely okay (bruised ego aside) and that the bike suffered slight damage.

yep ego bruised, very sore but grateful to have been at low speed and to have not been run over, as you can see (particularly in the longer full video, very heavy traffic, lots of busses, i got up so fast not knowing if i was ok because of that.

:) yes, totally worried about the deer strike, the irony, a deer bounding down the road wont just stop and go oooh butterfly! quite like a vw will :)  yea way to close, longer video i was much further back as he slowed i didn't keep that distance but started to look for a lane change instead, bad move.

Hey, many of us have done stuff like this. Once I had the front end slip out from under me because I came to a stop at an intersection that had oil and junk on  the road. Combine that with a grabbing front drum brake(the only brake I used, if I remember)and you have problems.  The worst thing about it was that I knew better. All that I hurt w)as my ego:)

You seem to be OK and that is really what is important. BTW, do you have ABS?

 Nice helmet! No gloves?  You need a riding jacket, JIC you don't miss the car or the car don't miss you.
Can really save your elbows and shoulders on a soft roll like that too.

I have ABS but its currently disabled, needs a reset, I'm not a fan, hard to say what it would have done here.

I have gloves but they were in the bag (der)

saving up for a proper jacket but now i need a new lens for the headlight :( armored pants would be nice too but money money money, all i can say is that this hasn't made me want those any more than I already did, luckily they were not needed this time, I'd be in the same shape if I had gear, need to get some so i can stop murphy though, figure if i'm set up to slide i wont.

yea, really glad i had the camera rolling, very useful tool for myself and others to be able to see it all go down from the viewpoint of a 2nd up.

I had my wife on the back a few years back and pulled around a blind corner in a driveway. Had my feet down as the gravel was pretty deep and a service van was coming at me about 20 feet away. Driver was looking for something on the floor. I grabbed all the front brake and it just came to a stop. Luckily the van driver popped her head up before she ran over us. Made me an instant fan of ABS.

I can try to get a better shot of the tripod but basically i'm using the rear passenger handles for 2 of the legs, i had to remove the seat and really do some tweaking to get them in, then the back leg makes it just inside the back of the luggage rack, then the whole thing is held down hard with 3 bungee cords.
