RPM=Speed
« on: August 10, 2012, 02:42:04 PM »
Finally got my 85 back on the road... Of course speedo continues to defy me and not work... So.. if all of you could provide with a ball park figure that in 5th Gear at 4K RPM you are going X that would be great... This bike sure seems to want for a 6th gear as well... thanks

What it "wants" is high RPMs. It is not a car or a Harley.

Frakenduck- what do you feel the optimul RPM for this engine... It does seem to want to rev and i have not pushed it too far... Maybe since the the speedo is broke and i do not know the true mileage i am a little hesitant. I have seen them sailing along on U Tube at 220 KMH.

7,000-8,000 RPM

Go ahead and bounce it off of the rev limiter.  These engines are pretty bulletproof.  (Provided you change the oil on a reasonable interval.) Half tank of fuel or more is recommended.  If you go balls out with a low tank you can starve the fuel pump since it's in the middle of the tank and the gas gets pushed to the rear.  It doesn't hurt anything, just makes for a jerky ride.

Need to make a quick pass?  Chop it down to third and let 'er rip. :yes

It's just a matter of getting used to riding it. :mbird

(Insert usual disclaimers here about riding that way on public roads.)

It varies by bike.  If someone chimes in with a number then be sure to verify that they have the same final drive ratio that your bike does. (Stamped into final drive right behind where it mounts to the swing arm.)

My will not tach more than 82-8300, and then if I hold it against the stops, it will search up and down about 300.  What should the limiter be set at?  I suppose that you have to have "special software" to set that. Best fun is Bike Week at Daytona.  Cruise up the interstate about 65-70 and let a crotch rocket or two pull out to pass and drop it in to 3rd and tach it out, right against the stops.  This K is still pulling at 135, mine, just are not big enough to see how far it will go before that little voice is asking just what the hell I think I'm doing.   It is still fun even at my age.   Those rice rockets might get there but they just won't do it as fast in the higher ranges.   You have to watch that front end as it will still come off the road at 60, and startles the hell out of me.  They don't call these things Flying Bricks without just cause!

No software, it's a chip.  You'd either need a differently programmed chip or a programmable chip.

Stock '90 K75RT 32:10 fd w/ no calibration, 5k rpm == 70 mph, it will run there all day long.  I've run it at 6.5k rpm continuously for hours at a time in NV no problem.

YMMV,

Borrow a GPS and tape it to your handlebars. Make note of speed at various rpms. Also take another look at the hp/torque curve FD posted. There is a definite sweet range between 4000-6000. Thats where the fun lies.
