HELP! Broke retaining ring for front brake piston! 1986 K75C
« on: August 05, 2012, 05:20:41 PM »
Instead of an allen screw at the back of the lever to keep the piston inside the master cylinder, it's a snap ring on mine.

I broke it.  :eek2:

Can you find that kind of hardware at Canadian Tires (auto superstore) ???

I'm leaving for a ride in two days!!!

Argh!

Thanks :)

I can tell where to buy it in Norway..................but that don`t help you much.
I would guess at any hardware store of some decent size...don`t know how common mm`s is at your side of the pond.
On the other hand, 17 mm isn`t that common size either.

Sounds like you're in Canada from your ask.  Try Brofasco, Auklands Grainger, or Fastenal.  These are the Canadian equivalents of the US McMaster-Carr or Grainger Indstrial.  If you're in the GTA, also try Clark Industrial Wholesale.  These items might be available directly from BMW Motoradd or any motorcycle dealer service center.

No one seems to have that around...!!

Is there any other kind of "fastener" I could use to substitute the conventional lock ring? I'm leaving tuesday for a week-long ride, damn... Thanks all for your help! I'd gladly buy you a beer if you were close  cool shades

It looks to be a fairly standard snap ring, at least from the picture on the Maxbmw fiche. It or a reasonable substitute should be easy to find at a good hardware store, it's not the sort of thing that needs a really precise fit generally, as long as it seats in the grove and doesn't interfere with the push rod, you should be good.
How did you break it, was it rusted?

It was rusted, yes and was stuck in the groove - hadn't buldged for 26 years I guess.

I have just found one two hours away ( ! ) from here. God damn those little parts!

Thanks a lot guys!!!

See you on the road in eastern US or Quebec soon!
