It's nearing the end of this project.

The wheels came back looking GREAT!

Because I believed I had burned up the first ambient temp gauge, I ordered another one. He is Stave checking it out to make sure it works with a 9v battery and the 12v to 5v step-down transformer.

It's all good.

Here you see where I mounted the transformer on the right and the temp gauge on the left.

Here Steve is mounting the Smart Tire pressure sensors before mounting the tires.

I used double stick polybutylene to mount the transformer and the clock switches.

Steve suggested the location and I loved it!
Brilliant!

Almost ready to ride.

I love the contrast between the black wheels and the new exhaust.

Here I'm mounting the temp gauge probe.

I love this old K1100RS.

And away we go!

The first ride was just around the block twice. The in full gear for about 00:30.

After getting back from a short ride with Steve following, we found a few missing or loose fittings.

It's a bike again! There are a few tweaks that need to be worked out but nothing that effects riding it.

I have since put another 100 miles on it without any issues.

It's a very unique K1100RS, but still an honest looking old K11.
One of my goals throughout this project was remain true to the bikes form and function.

As I told Duck today...

I'm in a bit of a time crunch to work out some functional issues before H.M. on the first of May.

I made the mistake of wiring the clock bank into the PIAA relay, most likely on a wrong terminal causing them to turn off while I turn the PIAA's on.

Also I still need to retard the current on the running lights so that the blinkers can be seen.

I need to pull the clock panel off and water proof and seal in the clocks and temp gauge.

I'm not totally happy with the tank bag attachment at the saddle...need to rework it.

I still need to install the 2 gig chip in the 478.

I'm currently designing and hope to build a different 478 mount to lower it below the fairing.

I still need to order and install this...

I still need to dial in the J&M CB and trim the mic cover to fit better in my new helmet.

I need to hand paint the rear wheel bolt cover plate as well.

Problem: this vent hemorrhages fuel when the fuel cell is full AND the bike is on the side stand.

Solution: Insert a value.

Note to self: MUST remember to OPEN the value as soon as the bike is vertical and BEFORE leaving the gas station!

I went to the local Speed shop and learned that the expensive roll over shut off fuel vents have to exceed 90 degrees of tip before the ball bearing shuts off fuel escaping.

Cost = $2.35

I think brain surgery from the wrong end of python requires FAR LESS moving or removing of s*it to work on than digging my way to where the fan motor it mounted.

It quit working today.
Fuse is good.
Wiring directly to the battery (bypassing the relay) - no joy.

It was seized. While I'm this deep I'm going to replace the thermostat also.

It's difficult to turn by hand which confirms full failure.

The up-side is it happened now and not on some long motorcycle ride across counry.

It was like an Easter Egg hunt, I kept finding nuts, bolts, washers and one LED lamp that fell into the bowels of the bike while working on it since I bought the bike.

Oh, and who knew a radiator flush was included with EVERY fan removal. :bang-head:

Done. If you have ever had to pull a fan out of a K11 you will understand why I made this wire a little longer.

Holy poop! :huh

How they ever managed to make that connection...it MUST have been assembled before any other wire was fished thru the frame.

I’ve been extremely busy with work, life, riding and wrenching and have not kept this thread up to date.

Note to self, a penny saved is NOT a penny earned if by installing an older, used fan motor ALSO fails.

Color me EXTREMELY not happy about going BACK in the damn bike THAT damn far AGAIN!
Yes, I tested it before installing it.

So I have 7 days off and this is the “To Do List”
1. Install BRAND new fan motor
2. Install electronic cruise control
3. Remove and remount fuel cell so that the top case bolts go all the way to the frame
4. Work on fuel gauge
5. Replace tragkorb lid support
6. Repair CPAP AC/DC converter
7. Re-set Smart Tire
8. Apply reflective tape to tragkorbs
9. Transfer the Shop Whore license tag to this bike
10. Make new license plate holder

Take a look at what this guy did for his top box.. You might find his solution using turnbuckles more flexible than long bolts.
