Clutch Plate
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:56:23 PM »
Ok here it is.

I thought I had a problem after replacing the sprague starter clutch. I put the pressure plate, alternator, etc back in.

My concern was that turning the engine with a wrench was at least 10 times more difficult after putting in the new starter clutch. Before I could turn it with my hands.
Today I pulled the alternator. I can turn the engine with a wrench and socket, just it's really stiff and I can only turn it counter clockwise.
I'm only be able to turn the engine by hand in one direction, but that makes sense to me as with the new starter clutch installed, it should only turn one way.

If I happened to over tighten the retaining bolt for the clutch will this be an issue???

I have been using all hand tools. I can see the alternator drive dog turn counter clockwise as I turn the engine counter clockwise.... so far that makes sense to me.
Can anyone offer suggestions?

If you can move the engine in only one direction, the gears between the sprag and starter is stuck.

Ok I'm not understanding how this works.

Assuming I have an issue. What should I expect as "normal"?

If I turn the engine counter clock wise should the alternator drive dog be turning counterclockwise?

I seem to remember that when I had the sprage clutch and gears in my hand, the sprag locked if I tried to turn the gears clockwise in one direction but were free while turning them in the opposite direction.

The engine turns counter clockwise, but I would literally tip the bike over if I tried to turn in clockwise.

The engine should turn both ways with about the same amount or torque.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

ok
Well off comes the bell housing.
OK got the bell housing back off. Apparently I had the metal clip thingy behind the idler gear in wrong. I swear it looked right the way I put it in.
Well the proof is in the pudding I can now turn the engine in both directions by hand using the clutch plate.
Only have a couple hours tomorrow to mess with this thing. SO I guess it's next week now before I can get to ridden again.
I appreciate the feedback.
