trailtech speedo install
« on: March 10, 2012, 06:04:06 PM »
OK, my speedo quit on me and I couldn't find any one to repair it for me.  So I TOFTT and bought a nifty trail-tech speedo.  Here's what I found:

1.  I wasn't able to make the K-bike rear wheel pickup work.  Maybe the pickup is broken, I dunno.  But I had to wire it up to a little magnet on the front wheel.
2.  The tach, on the other hand, works fine.  The cable marked "tach" coming out of the speedo has a red and white wire.  Red goes to black/blue (Pin 16) and white goes to ground.  Set the speedo to 2 pulses per revolution.
3.  Wire red power wire from speedo to red/white "clock power" (pin 1), white to ground.

Also, if you disassemble the mounting bracket for the old speedo, it makes a fine mount for the trail-tech.  I'll post a pic if I get the durn thing working satisfactorily.

I have a temp gauge so I didn't put the temp sensor in, but I might later, to take advantage of the warning light.

I'm having a heck of a time getting the idiot lights to work.

First of all, the LED's don't work, had to use the regular bulbs.

I wired the oil warning lamp brown/green (pin 11) to one light, thence to ground.  Light stays on constantly.

I wired both turn signal indicators (blue/red and blue/black) together to one light, thence to ground.  All turn lights are on constantly.

I have a common ground for tach and idiot lights.

I'm gonna keep tinkering with the turn signal lights -- maybe they don't like being wired together? I'm not sure where to start with the oil warning light.

Will keep you posted with progress.  Meanwhile any suggestions would be appreciated.

You don't want the turn signal wires connecting to each other.  If the TT only has only one turn signal indicator then you'll need to isolate the turn signal wires from each other with a couple of diodes.  (Available at Radio Shack.  Think of a diode as a one-way valve for electricity.)

Figured out the check oil light.  We finally got a bright sunny day and now I see the true colors of the wires....

Each turn signal is now wired to its own indicator light.  Before, they were all on constantly.  Now they won't work at all.  My battery is a little low, I'm gonna charge that and see how it does.

You might have fried the flasher relay by connecting them.

Do some troubleshooting first before leaping to the conclusion that the flasher relay is fried though.

Check your fuses.  The flasher relay has two power inputs: one switched (Fuse 7) and one unswitched(Fuse 3).  If either of those fuses is blown then the relay can act weirdly.

I have a trailtech on my K75 an I used pins 17, 18, 19 for the turn signals, and I have left and right indicators seperate. The LEDs should work, you might have them installed backwards (they only work one way), try putting them in the other way.

OK got it.  Replaced a burned out fuse and got the blinkers working again.  The oil pressure switch needed power.  Everything is working and now I know all my colors in German.

So in summary:

1.  Looks like brown pin 13 or 18 can be used as ground wire.
2.  Speedo power: + pin 1 red/white, - ground
3.  Tach: + black/blue pin 16, - ground.
4.  Speed as manufacturer directs, cable runs to front wheel, magnet attaches to brake disc.
5.  Temp can be installed per manufacturer if desired.
6.  Turn signals (blue/black, blue/red) to separate indicator lights but common ground is OK.
7.  Oil pressure indicator: + green/black pin 6, - brown/green pin 11 (no ground, the oil pressure switch is grounded).
8.  High beam indicator: + white pin 15 (don't confuse with white pin 7),  - ground.  (Reverse if you want a low fuel light, ie white pin 7 to common ground).

May be schwartz be with you!

Thanks for the write up. I am heavily considering this if I decide to mod my bike at all
