1985 K100RS Won't Start
« on: December 29, 2011, 08:10:11 PM »
With an unexpected break in the weather, I tried to have a short, mind-clearing ride.  The Bike had other ideas.  She refused to start, or even make an effort.
I fiddled with the kill switch, put her in gear and rocked back and forth, tried the starter with the clutch in but no joy.  The headlight comes on, but the neutral light doesn't. The horn sounds but I hear no sound from the fuel pump. The battery is charged. When I push the starter button there is absolutely nothing happening. Not even a solenoid click.  I have not ridden this bike for about one month.
Is this an indication that the starter motor is dirty?
TIA for your ideas and suggestions.

Dirty starter issues usually manifest themselves with funky lighting issues first.

If the N light doesn't come on then your gear indicator won't put juice to the starter switch.

To bypass the clutch switch find it's connector under the tank and short those leads to see if that will get juice to the starter button. (It's not a high current deal as all it does is feed enough power to the starter switch to trigger the starter relay.)

That's where I'd start if the starter isn't getting juice.....

Thanks for the tip, I'll start there tomorrow.
Thinking back to the last thing I did to the bike (which usually turns out to be the source of the problem) I removed the right switch cover in order to lube the throttle.  Maybe I screwed up the kill switch when I did that.  If there is a problem with the kill switch, would the lights and horn continue to function?

An easy way to tell if it's the start/kill switch is to see if the brake light works when you hit either brake.  The kill switch cuts power to the brake light.

I just knew the bright sun and blue sky this morning would be a good omen
I think I've found the problem.  The no. 1 blade fuse was open.  I replaced it and the bike jumped to life immediately upon my hitting the starter button.  Going back over my recent work on the bike, I think I know what cause the fuse to blow.  I recently installed heated grips.  Wanting to incorporate the OEM switch with the Symtech (?) heaters, I wired into the no. 1 fuse so I wouldn't inadvertently kill the battery if I forgot to turn off the grip heaters when I stopped the bike.  The no. 1 fuse is 7.5.  I don't think that is up to the challenges of the heated grip circuit, so I have now installed a 10 A. fuse in its place.  I tested the heated grips while the bike was idling and the circuit held, however, I'm not sure if I had the switch on low or high.  Until I run it a while on both positions, I guess it's impossible to know for certain.  :hmm:
With this sun-drenched afternoon unfolding, I'm planning to do just that.
