So I think I finally got my rear brake issue resolved. Put a new brake line on that had a leak, and it took some time to bleed it.

But that's not why I am posting.

DID I DO SOMETHING WRONG? I sure hope not.

I had to take the rear wheel off the bike when I was trying to bleed the caliper, so once I got it sorted, I had put the rear wheel back on and instead of leaving it in neutral and torquing the lug nuts, I think I remembered somebody said to put it in first gear in another post.....

So I put it in first gear and torqued the lug nuts to 75 FT-LBS in two rounds, so I was torquing the engine in the reverse direction, nothing seemed to slip, it all torqued up.

Then I started it on the center stand and now that I think about it I heard a noise that is more like on my K1200GT that sounds like the gearbox rattling around, they all do that in neutral. But never heard it on the K1100. Didn't think anything of it at the time, put it in gear on the center stand so I could test the back brake. I did shift it to 3rd and applied the brake and then the engine stalled. It wouldn't restart. It turns over no problem, but doesn't catch. I can hear the fuel pump cycling when I cycle the ignition. The engine was running for probably 10 seconds in neutral and another 5-10 seconds in gear before it stalled.

DID I DO SOMETHING WRONG? I hope not. WTF. I rode the bike 5 miles so far. Took 3 weeks to get the rear brake line.

Figure I would post before I go to bed. Tomorrow is another day.

There is a switch on the sidestand that kills the spark when the stand is down.  It doesn't stop the fuel pump or starter.  That may be your problem with the engine running.  A secondary problem with that switch is that after you try to start the engine with no spark, the engine floods and won't start.  After sitting all night, if the switch is allowing spark, the engine should start.

The connector for the sidestand switch is on the right side of the bike near the connector for the tank.  I think you can disable it by unplugging it.  The engine should then start if that's the problem.

I just went out and tried the bike again....and I have been bit by the side stand switch before (but didn't even think about it this time) and it appears it is working just fine. I can hear it click when I raise/lower it.

Put the timing light on the one spark plug wire I could easily get on and it's sparking when it's cranking. Normally the bike starts right up within 1 second. No dice.

I guess the next thing to do is to check the spark on all the wires and raise/lower the side stand to make sure it cuts it out, since i have the fairing back on, I don't know how hard it will be to get to the fuel rail hose connection as I'm back inside.

Darn, the second I thought I was completely done, it doesn't start any longer after dying out.

Unplug the Motronic, sing one stanza of Happy Birthday, plug it in again then see if the engine will light up.

In fact, just disconnect the ground cable at the transmission and sing a couple of lines from Money for Nothing then reconnect and try starting it.

I disconnected the ground cable, sang until the neighbor's dog started howling and noticed the clock was still on. It would still turn over. Then I saw that the Odyssey 680 battery negative terminal extension was touching the bottom of the Motoronic providing a ground path. Loosened everything up so it was no longer touching, the bike was dead for about 60 seconds, hooked up the ground again and nothing. Just turns over and doesn't start.

Glad it's going to be 95 today in Chicago. I'm working in my shed where the bike is jammed in there with a bunch of other things.

So I brought it over to my main garage. Verified that it has spark on all four cylinders by using a timing light while turning it over.

Then I took off the fuel line at the aft end of the rail, I was expecting it to be pressurized, but it wasn't. Only the hose had a small amount of fuel coming out of it. Nothing from the rail.

I did buy a used BMW fuel pump for the bike, it did work unit at least yesterday, it could of failed, but if it did, it's a mechanical failure, or so I think as I can hear it running when I cycle the ignition. But it does not pressurize the rail.

The fuel tank is completely full to the top.

What would you do next? I was thinking of jumping the fuel pump with opposite polarity a few times, then plug it back in to see if that changes anything.

Is the line a supply or return? Thanks for any advice.

I figured it out. The tubing that I used for inside the tank is obviously not correct. I did get it from somebody, it's a Tygon brand and it has this clear sleeve in it, but the sleeve pushed its way out of the tubing and the hose disconnected from the fuel pump discharge.

Now to find some fuel tank hose and I'll be back in business.

Better in my garage than on the road.

The hose your looking for has to be rated SAE 30 R10 EFI submersible hose.

I ended up going to my local Ducati dealer, they sold me some hose that they said was rated for in-tank applications, when they said it was $4.15 for a foot, I asked them again if it was rated for in-tank applications and the parts guy stated he uses it on his bike for in-tank. I spent the money and will inspect it in a month or so. Everything is back to normal again.

If it's rated for in tank application it will have the rating on the hose. If it's not on the hose I would be very wary. I  had a discussion on Tuesday with the local Pirtek hose guy. A local K owner had been using in tank hose sold to him as submersible. I went to check whether it actually was submersible. I was told if it is submersible EFI hose it will be marked as such SAE 30 R10. That is not to say that some unmarked hose may stand up to being submerged and subjected to a petrol ethanol mix. But I for one won't use anything that is not marked correctly, after seeing some of the aftermath of using the incorrect hose.

I looked up the part number of the hose, I can't find where it is rated for in-tank. I bought a 2' piece off ebay today rated for in-tank and will replace when I get it. Only takes a few minutes. Thanks for the help!

So I went out for my first real ride on this bike this morning, was a little strange at first, but didn't take long to really like it! Love how it goes through turns, so easy to lean the bike over. Very comfortable too.

I like that the gearbox isn't so BANG BANG when downshifting. My K1200 is.

Not as fast as the K1200, but once you get on the K1100, she goes. Feels different all around. Great bike.

Great thread!  Compliments to the author.    An excellent read for all, but especially K bike Neophytes. Methodical, no bullshit. Great problem solving and execution. Very thorough.

Above 5k rpm this bike finds it's stride.  Punch the throttle at around 6k or a little better and out comes this deep throated growl that will make you grin like when you got your hands on your first set o titties!  Oh, and my K11, runs rich, always has, (better than lean I figure) burns a little oil too.  But it has never left me stranded. Once you get the components up to par, it will run forever! 112350

So I received my SAE 30 R10 submersible hose and installed it on Saturday, the other hose was already getting hosed.....it was starting to get soft. Definitely not for submergence. So it's all good now.

Then I rode with three other guys up to Lake Geneva, WI from Chicago and back yesterda, about 200 miles. Shortly after we left it was raining, not too hard for about 30 minutes.

I can't believe how GOOD this bike rides, so incredibly easy to ride, lean over, everything. I think I need to change out my front fork oil, but I can do that over the off season.

It is really confidence inspiring as compared to my 03 K1200GT. That bike you really have to shift your weight through the corners if you want to feel comfortable, and it's much heavier/harder to balance at low speeds as compared to the K1100. I don't mind not having the 6th gear on the K1100, but it would be nice. And once you know how to get on it, she is a fast beast.
