Travel Trunk Latche?

What is the travel trunk latch supposed to look like?
A previous owner had used wood screws, an aluminum block, and latch from a Samsonite suitcase. Ugly as it was, it was mainly functional, but then the JB Weld holding the aluminum spacer block came loose. Yes, I did try to re-JB-Weld it, to no avail.
I'm not really that concerned with the ability to lock it. However I'm open to suggestions for something better than the previous hack I used involving a tie-wrap (zip-tie, etc.).

I've used a window 180* flip latch, the kind that cams tight at the end of the throw. Easy to install, although it looks like some JB or fiberglass would help smooth and strengthen your work surface ;) Good Luck

If it's the one in this photo from one of your threads, it isn't OEM.

Is that a Reynolds rack under the case?  Did Reynolds make cases?  Are they still in business?  That may be a good place to look.

My K has an embarrassing amount of Lowes and Home Depot hardware on it.  Usually hold up better than the pricey BMW stuff.

Actually, I've ordered from BMW a replacement and that's on my list of maintenance once it warms up a bit more here.

That a Luftmeister trunk.  I've got one on my 82 R100RT.  I replaced the laitch once way back.  I was able to get it from the dealer at the time.  Luftmeister is now out of business as far as I know.  Here is a current eBay listing of a Luftmeister trunk showing the laitch.

I have seen 2 different versions. One has it's own tubular frame that mounts several places to the bike. The other has studs that go into the tail section where the stock luggage rack mounts. Both styles the boxes are the same, other than the studs installed. They just mount differently.

An earlier style latch assembly can be used—either front-and-center, or one on each side of the front, after the surfaces have been repaired. A plate of sufficient thickness would need to be mounted under the laitch on the case to align it with its catch on the lid but that would be easy enough. Longer rivets would be needed.

Use of the OEM BMW latch allows it to be keyed alike to the rest of the bike.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of variations in tragkorb/top box keys. I've checked two of my mates keys and both will open my tragkorbs. I bought a heap of Brick parts the other day with a set of tragkorbs and a top box my keys will open the tragkorbs but not the top box. When we get to socialise again I'll have to check a few more Bricks.

That translates into the ignition switch ( key and tumblers ) being that easy to breach also.
