K1 GAS CAP BITS

Wanted to remove the gas cap assembly on my 1990 K1 to replace the seals and gaskets, but could not get the entire assembly out (probably stuck to rubber seal under it) so just removed the part underneath the cap itself.

When I finally managed to get the conical piece that fits down into the gas tank opening, the bits inside it popped out.
Not sure which way the two interior pieces fit back in.

Oddly enough, this piece and associated gasket seems unique to the K1; the good vid showing how to disassemble and rebuild the gas cap on a K100 -- https://www.euromotoelectrics.com/product-p/ft-gasketkit461.htm -- does not show this piece.

So, wise ones, who can help me get this superb piece of Teutonic engineering back together correctly?

The K1 and the later models of K100, and K75 all have the same cap—16111453641. The early model push-button caps were prone to vapor lock. Yours doesn't seem to have the same latch configuration as mine, which is like the one in the video. Compare yours.

Does yours open using just the key or do you also need to push on the key cylinder?

Mine opens with just key turn.

The issue is not the cap per se; it is the interior bits under the conical part that goes down into the opening.
Watching his vid, no parts like mine when he gets that conical cap off with the adjustable wrench.

The cap is the sum of its parts.  :laughing4-giggles:

As I indicated, the K1 and the late model K75/K100 models all have the same part number for fuel caps which means they are identical.

Looking at your photos, I would place the triangularly configured, vented part facing the fuel tank's interior, the gasket beneath it and the cover over it. If that created fume problems, I'd reverse it. If that didn't work either, I'd find a later model cap.

This is one of those times when following procedure rather than acting extemporaneously when encountering difficulty, then paying attention might have made things slightly easier but it's not the end of the world. The plastic parts look slightly worn. Is the tank's interior clean?

I appreciate your continued assistance; however, don't appreciate the judgement and lecturing. Had I found a procedure, I would have used it; spent a good 1/2 hour attempting to follow the method shown in the video to no avail.  Finally understood the conical gizmo popped off, not unscrewed.
Tank's interior is brilliantly clean.  I cleaned the small internal bits in photo once I saw the dirt in the pix; now spit-polished clean.

A bitsa is a mostly British term meaning bits a this and bits a that.
You aren't the first to fail to appreciate my lecturing, although I really didn't get started at that.  :laughing4-giggles:   Nevertheless, you're well on your way to cracking this mystery. Somebody with more equanimity at hand is bound to take up your cause.

There is nothing I appreciate more than a man who is willing to listen and be accountable even for unintended consequences (as am I for screwing this up!).

As always, what we say isn't as powerful as the way we say it; has taken me years to get that...

I did, and his gas cap did not have the internal bits that were causing my confusion.  Someone sent me pix of his disassembled showing which way those bits went in.

Now to keep trying to loosen the entire cap from tank.
Have sprayed with silicone and still (gently) trying..
