Just wondering if it has improved springs or shocks over a C or T unfaired bike... It would make sense considering extra weight of fairing, but is it heavier duty in any way?

Here's a table showing the evolution. The Showa fork was considered superior and was used in production from 8/91.

Thanks - bloomen eck, 0.3 of a mm - tricky to measure - but tried, seems like 40mm... not got any calipers

Any other outside way of telling whether it's showa or not?

Sure, there's another outside way of telling one from the other.

Go to MAX BMW's parts fiche. Go to Model. Click on K75RT. Choose Front Suspension. Compare the axle mount in the diagram of Inner Tube-Sport with the axle mount in the diagram of Fork Slider, which is the Showa. Then look at your photo. Any bells ringing?
