Rate My Splines
« on: March 09, 2018, 07:13:08 PM »
Hi Motobrickers,

So I dropped the final drive off today to check out the condition of the splines.

Everything seemed to be covered in a fine layer of red grease but it was probably fairly dry.

Is the red stuff BMW origonal?

How would you rate the condition of these splines?

Images attached.

Thanks in advance.

Those pictures look pretty good to me.  What I look for is a nice wide flat spot at the top of the spline, on both parts.  A nice sharp corner at the edge of the flat is also nice.

As the splines wear, the flat at the top gets narrower, and the banging between the parts rounds off the edge.  You need to clean them good to get a good view of what is going on.

And here is the spline from the transmission. Is that groove normal?

The groove is normal. A snap ring inside the driveshaft u-joint fits into that groove to hold the driveshaft to the output shaft.

Really! I didn’t remove any snap ring to pull the driveshaft off.

The ring is inside the spline on the u-joint.  It stays in there when you pull the shaft.

When you pulled the shaft off the transmission output spline you did feel resistance didn't you?

Yes I did. I levered it off.

The ones from about 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock look suspect to me, but maybe it's the lighting or residual grease.

Best way to photograph splines is looking straight down them.
