Oil sight glass
« on: October 18, 2017, 01:19:29 PM »
My R-bike popped the sight glass this morning. Oil all over the place...

This glass is the same as the K. Literally same part number. The stupid thing is press-fit in the block from the outside.  WTF were you thinking, BMW?

First of all, is there a "new and improved" version of that?

Second, has anyone just tapped that hole and put in a standard industrial glass?

Seems like you would be able to use something like this: http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/fasteners/machinery-hardware/fluid-level-sight-glasses/aluminum-fluid-level-sight-glass-w-o-reflector-m27-x-1-5-thread-r05-b?info

Find an R forum or BMWMOA, lots of fixes out there.

In all my years here I can recall one member having his K bike sight glass blow out. (Anyone else remember Crapdealer Bob?)

Have heard it said that the problem is worse with R bikes because of the pressure pulse of pistons going in and out together.

Some on here have replaced cloudy sight glasses. Drill a hole in the existing one, run in a self-tapping screw, grab the screw with a pair of Vice Grips and pull the glass out. Tap in the replacement and go ride another hundred thousand miles.

my original post seems to have disappeared except for the quote.  I described that in R bikes crankcase pressure peaks when both pistons are at their lowest position simultaneously.  You don't get that with a K bike layout so the sight glass is not as likely to pop out.  I have never seen it happen on a K but know of lot's of R's it's happened to, sometimes catastrophically.

My R bike has a reed valve in the crankcase breather to ensure a low pressure within to overcome the problem of compression in the crankcase when both pistons are on the "down" stroke.

Could it be that the sight glass blows out due to a problem with the crankcase ventilation system?

If you wanted to replace it, it shouldn't be hard to pry it out.

I just found a place that has them for $30 instead of the $45 everyone has them for.
