drive shaft destroy k100rs 1991
« on: October 03, 2017, 10:25:33 AM »
Hello everyone,

I'm in Montreal, Canada, I have a K100rs 1991 that as being started cafe by the previous owner.

I made the mistake to belive him when he told me the spline has been maintenance not long ago, the bike was in descent shape, so I had no reason to not belive him. Big mistake, what would have been a 1h job last week became a nightmare!

So I'm seeking advice, first I toke pretty much everthing appart, the final drive as no damage (tx motorcycle god), the U-joint is completly destroy and the shaft itself as the surrounding rubber partialy damage (but maybe by time), see picture

so :

1-should I replace the shaft as well, or it fine like that?
2-can other part as being damage by that destruction?
3-is there other model that are compatible, just u-joint or shaft
4-any idea where to find those part in Canada?
5-I eard about a specific grease for that, what the name and where can i find it?
6-anything esle here I should considere?

Thank you in advance

Photos need to be directly in front of the shaft and clearly focused, Kevin.

the teeth are fine, it's the rubber that worries me, that why the angle, and the focus got lost in the downgrade quality to be able to post it  :(.

How come I have three K75 driveshafts lying around and none of them have any visible rubber? Is that a K100 thing?

When my u-joint looked suspect, I got an OEM match from Rock Auto.  I do not have that K100 any longer or I would look up the nomenclature for you.

I think there may be cheap u-joints from China that may fit.  I think there are a few members here that go for cheap alternatives from China.

I just did the same job on my 1990 K100rs. My u-joint was blown apart just like yours. I ended up getting a used drive shaft ass'bly from a wrecker in the UK for a not unreasonable amount of money; plugged it in and away I went. Pretty straight-forward job and not a lot of money

Is this what happens when the u-joints aren't phased properly, or is it caused by something else?

Hi,
I don't know if it was phasing, I just got the bike and it was completely destroyed when I opened the casing, that would be pretty dum doh, it's very simple too phase.
Since I didn't get any advice I went with what I thought, I keep the drive shaft, just got a use U-Joint from a UK shop name Motorworks, great service, the part was A1.
And because I'm doing all my mechanic in the streets, I will bring the bike to BMW, so they can check for further damage and lube the spine at the same time.
And funny, I can't find any of the BMW recommended grease in Canada, so, just for the transport purpose,I put red n tacky, I'm sure it's shit, but that will make it for the transport. So basically, I still have all the same interrogation, but winter is coming, no time to wait, so I will pay for the answers.
thank you

Honda M-77 'assembly paste' is available in Canada -- see nearest Honda dealer. Make sure the contents of the tube have not separated into a gray liquid and a hard black lump before squeezing the tube and losing the liquid. If separation has occurred, cut open the tube and re-mix the solid and the liquid with a spoon before applying.

Laitch suggested Loctite LB 8012 Moly Paste. This should be available in Canada.

Bon chance.

So to respond at that question, yes, that drive shaft is done, that rubber is like the anti-shock system of the drive shaft, so back to ordering parts online!
