Gauging oil level
« on: September 16, 2017, 09:10:41 PM »
Without setting my 91 K100 on it's center stand is there any way of accurately guaging the oil level by observing the oil level in the window?

You could have somebody sit on it flat footed and hold it still while you stick the gear box and eyeball the engine site glass.

Why not just put it on the centerstand?

Was the center stand damaged? I read in a previous post the side stand on your bike was damaged and repaired. Does your bike still have its lift handle?

The center stand has been replaced and the kickstand now works flawlessly. I'm the problem, I'm old and getting it on the stand is an iffy process at best.

I built a drive in push out front wheel clamp when I did my rear main seal. If you have a welder they can be built or they have been made out of wood. Virtually what you are aiming at is two braced vertical supports wide enough to allow your wheel in, additional tie down straps can be added. Mine resides in the back shed and is a pain to extract but if needed pictures can be taken and posted. it is no work of art and was thrown together out of what I had at the time in a very short time. They can be bought new on line however they have a pivoting action that could make the bike just as hard to extract.

Another option could be an inspection mirror on a rod. Stand the bike up, put the mirror down so you can see. They even have some on telescoping rods, so you could keep it with you on the bike.

Brilliant! Here's a likely candidate.

Camera phone on a selfie stick. But that is no help for gear box and final drive.

Drain and refill with exact volumes, plus a slight over fill night be an option.
