Accidentally double sealed oil filter
« on: June 05, 2017, 09:30:52 AM »
I have been restoring my K100LT ABS and changed the oil today. I completed the task without too much fuss and saw the low oil pressure light stayed on. I took everything back off and when I was untwisting the new filter, a seal came off with it, not from the new filter but from the old, BMW filter. I have never seen that happen before, but checking the old filter, sure enough, the seal was not there. Long story short, check your old oil filter to make sure the seal came off with it.

A common occurrence, and an issue that can cause catastrophic engine failure.  When I showed my boys how to do an auto oil change I stressed the importance of always checking the old filter to ensure the seal was still attached.

Had the same experience but don't remember if it was on my K75 or the R1100RT.

Did it on my girlfriends old Plymouth years ago. By the time I backed it out of the garage the oil light was on and 4 quarts of oil on the floor. Lesson learned the hard way. Took a while to absorb all that oil. I found out that Brake Kleen lifts the oil off the concrete quite well once you have cleaned off the worst of it. Then dump a bunch of kitty litter on the Brake Kleen  and scrunch it around with your size 11's.
