ABS reset not working
« on: June 02, 2017, 04:25:19 AM »
Hi,  Just bought my first brick. A K75RT 1993 but I'm having trouble with the abs.
Just need some help please from you guys with the knowledge.
The bike abs lights flash together when I operate the brakes but they don't go out when I'm riding.  (which they should of course)

I've wired the LED test and I got the dreaded 7 flashes that points to the ABS  module being defective.
I've done the diagnostic cable to ground and abs button 30 seconds, to try to reset the abs. Nothing. even shorted the ABS switch to be sure it worked.
Even bought a new Odessey pc680  battery with 12.9 volts. Repeated everything over and over.

My question is (before I get a new ABS box)  how do you know the reset has worked?  what happens?
should the abs light stay on when the reset happens? Surely there must be a stage between the reset and then the fault being read again.
Its strange the abs light cancel does nothing when trying to reset it and yet cancels for 10 mins fine, when riding.
Any help, much appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks Johnny!
I'm gonna do 10 full resets tonight, then ride, then keep doing that til Monday.  I hear there is a way of resetting by riding along in 3rd gear, 20 mph, then clutch in , turn off
ignition, turn back on , clutch out, then down to 5 mph, back up to 20 mph.? anyone tried this?
The abs 2 box has a magic terminal 21 on the abs connector that can be grounded to reset. Would that work on an ABS 1 box?

Resetting ABS seems like an OCD dream job—initially anyway.

Justin, have you done anything like bleeding the brakes to freshen the fluid and eliminate air bubbles? With bikes these ages, renewing the brake lines isn't a bad idea either. Have you measure the gap from the sensor to the ring for both wheels? Have you determined if the ABS actually works for both ends?

My "91 had flashing ABS lights when I got it but the reset (luckily) worked for me. I went ahead and replaced all the lines and flushed the system, didn't look like it had ever been done as it was VERY dark.

Thanks Alabrew,, it's on my list of jobs but I keep getting distracted by this ABS chinese puzzle. I've got a vacuum pump now so I'll
bleed the brakes, modulators first. I only got the bike last week. I assumed the abs was not working but I've not locked up yet. My other bike is a 5 hp lambetta Ld 150 so I'm taking it real easy. Wish I could just swap the abs module to test, I'll probably order a 2nd hand one next week.

Make sure your battery is up to snuff.  A poor or weak battery is a sure fire way to not have your ABS work right, display faults, and not reset.

Thanks bizzaro, I did read the odessey pc680 was the weapon of choice where batteries are concerned, but I bought one last week hoping it would solve
the ABS 7 deadly flashes but no. looks nice though.

You are aware that the reset is different for ABS I, and ABS II right.  Make sure you are using the correct reset or it will not work.

I can only get the telltale light and abs light to flash together when I press both brakes.
But should I do this before holding the ABS button? I've tried it both ways and it doesn't work, but
it never mentions pressing the brakes in any instructions listed.
I've found a 2nd hand ABS unit online that's not silly money, so I'll have a bang on that.
Hopefully that will reset.  What are the chances of that happening?.........

The reset in this post is for ABS II. One of the links will take you to the ABS I reset. And they are both in the Library.

And , if i understand you, your ABS is actually reseting briefly, but then faults on the run.  Did you check your gap? Connections? It would seem your ABS system is working as intended, is indicated an error, and needs adjusting and/or some attention to its components?

Just to let you know My ABS is now working !!  I managed to get a 2nd hand unit from Motorworks here in England for a reasonable £95  /$120.
The lights flash together when the brakes are applied and then go out when moving.Yes!. Checked the back brake and felt the pulsing. Not so keen to try the front yet!
Even got a new ABS insert for the switch to look like new. Apart from spending half an hour looking for the spring that pinged out, it's all been good.

:2thumbup: Nice job getting it working again.

It's good to know that I am not the only one who is too chicken to try the front ABS.
