Changed the coolant bikes fan runs all the time
« on: April 30, 2017, 09:15:16 PM »

I changed out the coolant on my 95' K 1100 RSA and took her for a ride. The good news is that the temperature gauge works well and so the does fan. The bad news the fan is on and the ambient temperature is about 65-68 degrees so I'm concerned. The gauge starts low but gradually rises it goes slightly past the center but the fan is on all the time.

I was careful to slowly pour then stop and wait then pour some more until radiator was full. I did start the bike on my lift and let her run a while until the fan came on then it shut off so I figured everything was normal. When I parked the bike I felt the lower radiator hose and I couldn't touch it very long. I placed my fingers through the throttle side fairing louvers and that hose was a lot cooler so I suspect either air pocket or thermostat.

I am letting the bike cool hoping that if it's an air pocket maybe it'll purge itself. The coolant reservoir is 90% full same as before I started the bike so its not drawing any coolant from the reservoir.

Anyone go through this. I want to go to the BMW Mini Rally in Michigan this weekend but can't until I resolve the cooling issue.
Hoping I don't have to slide the tank back :(

Suggestions, ideas or "yeah I ran into that before and heres what I did " Thanks

Should I pull the tank back and take off the Radiator cap and start let air purge or do you think it will purge sitting there?

I think driving the bike and passing air over the radiator helped it cool maybe just letting her sit with the fan on allowing the thermostat to open draw coolant then close etc.

Running it while it is overheating just don't make no sense, compadre. You've been given directions for a time-tested, Wisconsin-style of doing this. Put on your overalls and galoshes. This should be as easy as licking frosting off a spoon with your head under a stock pot.

What is a K1100RSA? What is the model year? Was it a bar mitzvah gift or did you win it in a poker game wherever you are? Have you posted a few photos of this critter yet? I haven't seen one. How about posting the bike information in your profile so readers will know what you're working on without backtracking? If you post your location, too, maybe a nearby member will pm you asking for permission to come over and burp your cooling system for you while you grill the bratwurst.

Well there was a sh*t ton of air in the system. I spent the better part of an hour burping it. Still not down had to make up a hose to slide into neck of filler so I could fill up the Radiator after it burped. Going slow ever so slow...thanks
