Higher/wider windshield/screen for K1100RS ???
« on: April 27, 2017, 05:53:09 AM »
Hello everybody,

In a month or two I will be selling my '89 K100LT and buying '95 K1100RS. Being used to an excellent level of protectonwhich LT's fairing and winsdcreen offer in a bad weather, I would like to replace the very low shield/screen on RS with something both higher and wider.

Any recommendations - and sources where to get them? Preferably in Europe - as US suppliers most often don't want to ship overseas (or use moronically expensive UPS & similar instead of ordinary USPS airmail).

Cheers from Tarik in Bosnia

That's quite a lot of work you did contacting all US suppliers, Tarik.

The manufacturer at this link uses the US post office to ship. Does he ship overseas? Was he on your list?

I sent them a message today, I did not say I already contacted them all, just spoke from previous experinces with ordering other parts.
Aeroflow lists at their web site two European distributors (one in Denmark and another in Russia, but Russian one does not have K100/1100RS windshield in its programme).
I wonder if Parabellum has distributors outside the USA too...

But while Aeroflow screen costs 287 US$ in the USA, in Denmark it's 410 US$ - so it's practically cheaper ordering directly

Let us all know what Parabellum's response is, Tarik. Sometimes it takes a couple of pokes to get a response. The pace of life is slower in the South. :giggles

I will - and I also posted the questions at http://www.k100-forum.com/forum and http://www.flyingbrick.de/index.php?board-list/ (both in German and English sections).

Find it very peculiar that there are not more distributors for these US K100/K1100RS windscreens in Europe - or no European manufacturers of similar products ?!

After all, BMWs are much more popular in Europe than in the USA, especially in Germany where they are always on the top of best-sold bikes.

It looks the French have something attractive, and the prices much more affordable than US products!!! 158 and 173 US$ respectively

without the LT fairing, you don't have much protection anyway.  the lower RS screen is better for the RS riding position as it allows more airflow to the chest which supports the upper body at speed.  better rider gear is the bad weather answer....

ride the RS as is for a while.  give it a chance!  I went from a tall Aeroflow on my K75S to the stock shorter one and am not looking back. shorter one much better.

Thanks for the advice,  I will give it a try. Mind you, I intend too to exchange the handlebars - as I am no fan of the narrow RS handlebars and more sporty riding position but prefer sitting upwards like on the LT, I intended to exchange them immediately for the wider touring-type

In that case, I would get an LT fairing.  It will be much better for your desired riding position and provide better protection from the weather.

or just get another LT.   why get an RS, then change all the features that make it an RS?

Heh, there is a very simple reason: limitations of the country where I live.

Since a few years ago, it is not possible to import motorbikes that do not satisfy Euro 4 emission norm at minimum - i.e. only those built after ca 2004. So I am limited only to what can be found here in Bosnia - a small country (population 3.5 million) where BMWs were never very popular. There ARE a few LTs in the local small adds web sites, but they either don't have ABS brakes, or the owner ask too high prices for what I can afford.

So it will be one of two RSs, and I will simply adjust them to my needs...

What is the condition of your LT fairing?  If I am not mistaken, you should be able to swap fairings between the two bikes.  One of the nice things about these bikes is how interchangeable the parts are.

It means you have to buy the RS before delivering your old bike and spending a weekend swapping parts but it should be possible, and if you haven't already sold your old bike, might make it easier to sell with the newer fairing on it.  A side benefit is that the RS belly pan makes oil changes and some other maintenance items a bit harder and getting rid of it will make things easier.

Uh oh, it's a good idea, but I'm affraid it is not in such a good condition - some panels have already been repaired. But I will give it a thought, after I get hold of the RS. Maybe a good option...
