Peli Case 1450 as replacement for city cases
« on: April 23, 2017, 03:48:39 AM »
This first post introduces the idea of using Peli Case model 1450 as an alternative to the hard-to-find BMW City Case. Unfortunately there will then be a pause in the thread for a couple of weeks as I set off for Vienna in a couple of hours and then will be in Edinburgh.

The Peli 1450 is very close in total volume to the City Case as the first three photos show.

It should fit the bike very well as the next two photos show.

It would be possible to just bolt the Peli to the existing tragkorb rail and see what happens. I suspect it would last quite a while before the bolts start wearing through the plastic. To make it more secure, long-lasting and removable, I am thinking of using a truck/aircraft type cargo rail to attach them.  The idea would be to bolt a section of rail to the plastic tragkorb rail and then use double T-bolts to attach the case. The T-bolts can be slid into the cargo rail and the nuts tightened up giving a secure connection that can be un-mounted relatively quickly. Photos of the parts attached.

I will order the parts before I head off this morning and see if the idea actually works in a couple of weeks.

Finally found the time to make progress.

Drilled 8 mm holes in the OEM tragkorb bracket top rail and then bolted the cargo track to it.

Slid two double T-bolts in then dabbed a little white lithium grease on the ends of the bolts.  Then offered up the Peli case, transferring enough of the grease to mark the drill hole locations.

I used EPDM rubber washers to make sure the case stays waterproof and wing nuts so it is reasonably quickly removable. The case slides into place from the front. A single bolt in the lower front corner stops any sideways wobble.

Result is a solid fix that looks like it was designed for the bike.  :yes

Necessity is the mother of invention. Back in the 1970's I wing nutted two small cheap suitcases to the back of my BSA one red one blue painted them black. They weren't waterproof but they did the job for a while until they started to disintegrate.  :hehehe  I used to have a make up case as a top box on the Brick when I first got it, I bought four cheap from Zelows they didn't have the combinations, sold two kept two and I still have one. A lot of mates wanted to know where I got them from I paid $20.00 Au each, a bargain.

Looks just right :-)
Although to be picky I would suggest a penny washer under the bottom position nut to spread the load.
Where does one get that cargo rail from ?
And what am I going to do with the five city cases in my garage!!

City cases are very desirable.   Shouldn't take more than an afternoon to sell them all for a good price.

For those who may want to try a set-up like this, Seahorse brand cases make a very similar case for about half the $$ as Pelican.
I've had them on a KLR and currently on a Suzuki Vstrom and they work very well.

curious...why use the track at all?  why not just bolt the case to the rail?

I wonder why there is a maritime fixation among case manufacturers. Why not use lake or pond references like Muskellunge brand, Walleye or Bluegill?

Maybe all the other animals wre taken.
Not whales though. They would make a good trademark.
"Get a whale of a case from us." "You can whale the bejabbers out of our cases and they'll hold up".
Ok. Maybe not.

Btw, I responded to your question on that "other" forum.

Good point.
