1990 K75 RT Side Cover Pin Repair

Yesterday after I got my bike home I noticed that the left side cover was loose with the pin at the back being the culprit. Has anyone repaired one of these?


Semi related: the search function on this site is kind of aggravating. If you look up side cover pin repair, not only odes it pull up every "Pin" there is whether side cover or not, it also parses the words that have p-i-n anywhere in them. E.g.: imPINge. Makes the search feature virtually useless and clogs up the site with receptive messaging. Otherwise I love the site.

I broke the pin off of one of my side covers and repaired it last year.  Will go out later and see if I can find it to take a photo.

Here is a photo of the repaired cover from Moby Brick my K100RS.

I drilled a very carefully centered pilot hole up the length of the pin. 

Trimmed the rib down and drilled a clearance hole in the side cover.

Put a small brass wood screw covered with 5 minute epoxy into the pin to hold it in place.

The repair is solid and has held for two years now.

An alternative if you don't have the pin is to remove the rib, drill a hole and install a 2-56 machine screw with a nut and a couple of fender washers.  Slide a short piece of plastic tube over the screw.

It got me thinking that I could probably use some styrene tube from a hobby shop. Then I wouldn't have to drill it. But I do have a lathe so drilling it should be no problem. But if a guy didn't have a lathe....

I just used a drill press.

Drilled a hole in a chunk of wood clamped to the table. 

Put the pin in this hole after I carefully filed the end square.

Drilled my pilot hole while holding the pin from spinning with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Google is more efficient and will bring you right to relevant posts here and elsewhere if you use precise terms. The search site here is used to determine tolerance for frustration and thereby who is likely to manage well owning a Brick. :giggles

I get much better search results using google to search this site than the site itself.


However just asking gets great results as well, even if you have to endure a written berating from certain members along with the requested info...

I've learned my lesson. No more critiques. I'm scarred for life. I actually did a google search first but that is also not what it was 20 years ago. With all this pay per click crap people are putting totally unrelated words into their sites to drag one over there. Not sure why since the likely hood of me buying trendy T shirts is pretty unlikely. Now if they were grumpy old gearhead (hereinafter known as GOG) T shirts that would be different.

Johnny, you must have different side cover than mine. Or I'm just having trouble orienting myself to it. Did the insulation help?
