Hazard lights not working
« on: January 28, 2017, 09:54:40 PM »
Morning All,
my 1984 K100 RS has not had hazard lights since I bought it about a year ago. Is this a common fault on these bikes? Checked the switch connections and all seem OK however no power at switch. Indicators work fine as indicators.
Any clues to a fix?

Thanks

Welcome, ck971!

Where did you find those connections and how did you check them?

Check and clean #12 in the illustration below. Clean the other connectors while you're at it.  :yes

I've got a 1996 K1100 and my hazards didn't work when I got the bike. What I did was to keep switching them on and off and they started to work...sometimes. After a while of doing that, they now work perfectly. If you don't use these switches, they stop working.
The PO never rode at night so the headlight hi/low switch stopped working from lack of use. It was too late for that switch though and I ended up replacing it. I will try to take apart and clean out the old one, one of these days.

+1 on Beemerdon's reply.

The switches in my dash pads gave me trouble until I shot some Deoxit in them.  Took a couple days of working them to get them reliable again.  I also had to pry them out of the pad and put a little Vaseline on the edges of the rocker to help it move a bit easier in the pad.

You won't read any voltages on the wires going to the hazzard switch, except on the Blue/White one when the hazzards are working.  The flasher relay does all the magic.  You just have to ground the Yellow/Purple wire to get hazzards.  Most likely your switch is corroded as others have pointed out and you'll need to clean it, also as others have pointed out.  If you want to verify that you have operational hazzard lights, ground the Yellow/Purple wire after undoing the connector.  With the ignition on, you should get 4-way blinkers as long as the wire is grounded.
