New to BMW - K75S

Hi!

First BMW, but I've owned and wrenched a bunch over the years. Was looking for an R, but always thought the K75 was cool.

It's an 87' with just under 30,000 miles. It's been repainted (badly) and came with the bags. It's had less that 200 miles put on it since 2008 as the last owner kept records and sadly passed. The bike is 3 years younger than me!




I live in Cumming, GA - love to meet up and learn more about the bike!

Welcome to the klub!  With that kind of mileage your brick is still being broken in.  Looks like it's going to be really sweet once you do a little cosmetic clean up on it.

Have you had it running yet?

Welcome to the refined end of the Klub - the K75s is a beautiful machine. K100s and K1100s are a bit brutish by comparison (this is where I discretely take cover!). Oh - and the red ones are the fastest ...

looks like a nice relatively un-molested S.  Great bikes, I bought mine in 86 and still enjoy the crap out of it. http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech.shtml has lots of handy tips

Thanks for the welcome. It runs great, and I hope there aren't any bad surprises!

I got a bit of a discount. The guy thought it was an oil burner due to him starting it on the side stand.

Oil burner... What a great way to get a good price!

Shouldn't be a any bad surprises as long as you do a complete baseline maintenance with  fluids, splines, brakes, rubber bits, electrical connections, etc.   

Maintenance is a lot like foreplay.  She'll appreciate it and you'll learn a lot about her needs.   Then hop on and ride her hard.

Bricks do not like being idle the more you ride them the better they are.

Laitch - It had a bit of a tumble during it's use as a clothes hanger in the widows garage, the lower cowling(?) is also scratched and cracked.


Gryphon -  That's the plan. I have a Clymer's on the way, and a set on Shinkos as they seem to be a favorite on here. Had a set on my KLR and they worked fine. The spline seems straight forward enough - looking forward to digging into it!

I'd replace the fuel lines asap, next the brake lines.  Radiator hoses are probably fine.  Crankcase vent hose tends to split, if you have the original exposed rear brake reservoir they tend to get sun baked and brittle.  Lube the barrel on the hand lever end or the clutch cable, if it cannot rotate the cable will break there.

You've come to the right place for practical info and advice on your new ride. 


For me the K75S has just about the perfect riding position and is very comfortable for all-day riding.  With regular maintenance, which is pretty straight-forward, it will give you many years of reliable service. 


I second the advice on lubing the clutch cable at the lever and will add that you buy a spare and always have it with you.  It saved my trip one year.

Welcome!  You most likely have a gem.  With a little TLC, the bike will not let you down.

How do you define discount :popcorm ??  I apparently way over paid for mine :hehehe , and then bought it again in repairs :musicboohoo: .  Don't pay attention to Glacial...the SE's are the fastest :bmwsmile !

Nice find! I picked up a similar K75s in Northwest GA in August, with a much higher mileage and the same "it smokes a lot" issue from being kept on the side stand, and also having 7.5 litres of oil in the crankcase and a bad coil.....duh-uh ! You're in the right place to get all the answers to keep it running sweet, these guys have been a big help to me since I joined.

I think someone went after your covers with a spraycan of paint, my 87 has the raw casting finish. Very low maintenance.
Makes it lighter too! Red is faster and the fastest red is Code 632.

Welcome. I've been appreciating my K75s more and more as I get all the work done. Good advice already - give yourself a fresh maintenance baseline and enjoy the bike. Take a close look at the suspension too - it's been sitting a while and might benefit from some attention.

+1  Change front for oil...most likely there will be nasty oil in there.  When you drain it, really pump the bike up and down to get the crap out.  Then get this to clean the top seal of the old dirt saturated grease there.

Just a suggestion:  If the fork oil comes out really nasty with a lot of dirt and signs of water contamination you might want to do a fill with some cheap ATF.   Work the forks a bunch and drain overnight to get as much out as possible before refilling with your good fork oil.
