K11 Project butt naked
« on: October 14, 2016, 03:29:48 PM »
Hi all!

Have been lurking around the forums for a while now (here, the k100-forum and k11og.org etc).
So I figured it's time to put a project thread together, now when I finally have an actual K-bike to work on!

Well, ever since I first noticed a naked K100 I've been wanting to "build" my own.
Mostly because of the sexy gas tank and the beefy and dominating presence that the engine boasts with!

This is my first BMW-bike, and will fit nicely with my other bikes, as "the older big brother".
The sensible, yet powerful, wise brother :D
However, since he has served his fellow man since 1993 (and over 15 000km) in the Swedish police force
he now had a midlife crisis and decided to become a sleeker and younger looking bike.
(To attract the younger and sexier Ducatis around)

His brothers and sisters are at the moment A Yamaha XJ550, A Ducati 900SSie, a Suzuki DR650RE, a Kawasaki GPZ900R and a Montesa 315R.
And many, many more to come I hope!
Some people collects stamps, I've got the Bike hoarding gene I think.

Back to the bike,
It's a K1100LT ex-police bike from 1993 (in service to 2006).
The PO who bought in 2006 also bought a new seat and rear end to make it a civilian bike again,
(not the best of conversion I've seen but heck, I was gonna remake it all anyway.) He also painted it in the current metallic red color.
Anyhow, it's in fairly good condition, well.. sort of, but it will be. It has a Service booklet filled out with inspection and services up to 14008Km.
So I know the last time anyone checked the valve clearance, And it's on my todo-list since it's now up on 15800Km.

I wasn't really looking for a K11, but this one popped up on the market for a good price, mostly due to the fact that the ABS1 system kept signaling something was wrong.
So after some discussions about the price I rode home on a bike I'd been happy to walk away from. The price was too good.
I knew if I wanted to I could fix the ABS, MOT it and sell it with a profit.

So on to the issues with the ABS1 System.
With the wealth of knowledge on here and on other sites I first switched to a new PC680 battery to rule that out (the reset didn't work), but no go.
So had to check the diagnose plug for the error-code. And it showed that the front modulator didn't work.
Did the tests to check that it actually was something wrong with the Modulator (so it wasn't the relays or anything else).
And it was. So I Sourced another modulator on E-Bay.
Of course there was an older version and I had an updated version of the modulator.
But I switched out some fittings on the copper pipes, bleed the system out and tried it. ET VOILA!
No more blinking ABS lights and I went down and got the MOT done.

Next weekend I rode it up to the family cabin in the north of Sweden, met up with my cousin half way and rode the rest of the 450km journey in shitty weather.
Can I point out that the LT fairing is fuckin' awesome in shitty weather!
My cousin who rides a Kawasaki Z800 was soaked, when we stopped for a bite to eat, I had to point out that I had AT LEAST two or three drops of water on me!
He wasn't to happy ;)

The ride back home was in the beautiful fall weather, I enjoyed it a lot. But here is the kicker, It didn't feel like riding a bike. it felt like a small convertible.
The fairings had to go.

So whats My plan?

>To start with I'm cleaning up all the extra wires and fittings that I won't need.
>A thorough service is a must and on the top of the list.
>I'm replacing the LT handlebars (obviously) for a more RS-styled type of handlebars (But I'm keeping the LT grip heaters, So I ordered a set of handlebars with the original style slots for the wires).
>The headlight will be a stock Yamaha MT03 early model, not that expensive.
>I think I might trade my stock exhaust for a Remus model with another BMW owner that thinks his is to loud.
>The breadbox cluster will be removed and in it's place I'll run the KOSO DL-03 dial instead. (Keeping the TGPI card and the speedometer card wired to the new dash for full functionality).
>Will also make a new "dash" to fit the dial, buttons and some lights for the ABS and grip heaters. (The ABS light has to be there to pass the MOT).
>Also thinking of making a arm for the license plate (like the ones that the MV Agusta Brutale has).

Maybe, If I get a hold of, for the right price, a set of K1200 wheels. A boy can dream right? :D

The biggest modification I will make is a totally re-designed rear end.
I'm striving to make a seat/rear that doesn't require any modifications to the frame apart from a slight shortening (since it's gonna be a solo bike).
And I'm also going to put some effort in to get the city side tragkorbs to fit after the shortening of the frame.

The thing is, I already have a Cafe-bike, So I don't want that kind of rear end (and it wouldn't fit with the more naked/street styled front end).
I'm thinking of incorporating the looks from the GPZ900R rear end, in a smaller scale that is. But not sure how yet.

Thank you for reading this far in to my blabbering thoughts.

Here is a picture of when I first got the K11

Ohh, and bought a new set of these lovely things the other day :

Now I just need to think over if I want to weld on the "stick" that hold them up in the front (like the k75 tank) or solve it some other way.

Are those the naked bike side pieces?

Where did you get them?

Here is the prototypes of the new dash and the brackets for the headlight.
First mockup in Sketchup, then over to illustrator to make some layered cut outs (since I used a flatbed router used in the sign making business I did the prototypes in layers)

Need to make some changes for clearances but the basic size works and I measured the hole pattern and angle of the headlight pretty good.
But I still need to control the mounting angle of the headlight so it doesn't point to much up or down. (This design doesn't allow for any adjustment for the headlight).

Okey, finally got my new handlebar (LSL street with BMW styled ends for the heated grips),
Did the "mod" from ibmwr.org to stiffen up the handlebar mounts and cut off the extra LT stops on the clamps.

Then I could test fit the mt03 headlight and my prototype dashboard.

I'm not sure why, but the front end looks of.
And I can't really decide if it is the headlight that is to "tuckered in" giving it a flat nose look.
Or if it is the gap between the wheel and engine that makes it look weird.

Maybe a belly pan and lowering the front by a cm or two would make it look, "tighter"?

To me it's the rear part of the front fender that makes it look a bit odd for the look you're going for.

I noticed Chaos's rare left hand down crash bike picture had a "similar" mudguard but it was on...the other way round.I'm happy to concede that I am often wrong.Stops me getting too cocky.

Reviving this thread a bit, Have managed to sell the The fairing parts and found a set of K1200rs wheels!

Will soon start the dreaded electrical work to fit the new Speedo/tach. There is A LOT of wires in the K heart...

Are you going to use something like the BEP from Maru Labs in order to replace the speedo?

No, I hope to use the internal circuit boards from the oem instruments. Speedometer input and neutral signal.

Fits the K1200 wheel without modifications? Did you checked the offset / tracking line?
I tried a K1150, but this has an positive offset of 17.5mm.

Thanks.
