Gremlin shorting out my k100 rear indicators.
« on: September 02, 2016, 08:25:06 PM »
:dunno I don't know enough about the electrical system to figure this out, but, when i installed new rear 10w turn signals (12v) there was alot of buzzes and clicks coming from the bike. wired an LED brake light (works perfectly). All into the original harness/plug. worked great for a few days but then started blowing the parking light fuse 7.5w that's above the indicator fuse 15w.?? Can't see having a short that would suddenly appear from nothing . Can anyone elaborate on this subject for I'm at a loss?!? could it be the switch or relay? Maybe that's where the buzzes and clicks were coming from and I fried something..

To clarify, all you did was replace bulbs, or did you replace fixtures also and need to make new connections?

To clarify, I've nakified my k100 and fabricated a new Kevlar and fiberglass seat pan. I attached 2 new (bullet style) right and left signals to it and wired them to original BMW plug along with an LED stop light. Stop light still works but signals continue to blow the 7.5 Parking light fuse. I used proper connectors for all. I did not install the parking light( license plate light) yet and left it cut but not exposed. encased all into plastic storage under the seat pan. The actual signal fuse is intact. With key ignition on, I blow the fuse every time even before switching on the indicators.
Hopefully this clarifies.

It does for me. Thanks. What happens when you unplug the new indicators, install a new fuse and then switch the key to on? Does that blow the parking light fuse?

Nope. since unplugging the indicators, the indicator fuse is intact. And the parking light fuse is all good, too.

Well, now you know where your problem is, I think. You're going to need to take a close look at your signal components and assembly.

I'm going to try using nakify in a conversation at least once tomorrow.

You have installed LED's and 12v bulbs in the same circuit, they draw differing requirements, and may be causing a problem with the bulb monitoring unit relay. Fall prostrate toward the North and humbly beg RObert to take mercy on you.

What is happening with the front indicators and the gauge indicator?  Are those still OEM or have they also been changed?

TrueAce, BMU doesn't monitor the signal circuitry so LEDs or incandescent globes shouldn't matter.  The only different will be flashing rate.  In fact, my K75 has ibulbs front and LEDs back; no problems.
