Things that will absolutely get you killed on the road.
« on: August 26, 2016, 10:07:51 AM »
I will start with the first two.

Synthetic oil.  So slippery it will leak past your seals and oil down your back rubber causing slide-out.

EMGO trunks.  Sits back so far will take weight off front tire causing slide-out.

 1. Synthetic oil.
 2. EMGO trunks.
 3. Preoccupation with resentments while entering a corner.
 4. Failure to do regular brake system maintenance.  Including yearly fluid flush and replacing the rubber hoses.
 5. Transitioning from moving to not moving too quickly is the thing that kills most riders.
 6. Assuming that 'sharp curve' warning signs don't apply to me because I'm on a brick.
 7. Riding like a complete asshole seems to do in a few as well.
 8. Idiots texting or phoning while they should be looking.
 9. Using blue locktite when you should be using red locktite.
10. Riding with a helmet.
11. Riding with your brain removed.
12. Blind passing is a fool's game.
13. Riding on a multi-lane highway right at sunset, headed due west.
14. Zipping down a sandy farm lane on a dirt bike, turn the corner, road is flooded.
15. Filtering. Stupidest thing you can do on two wheels.
16. Driving slowly in the left lane.
17. All styles of ape hangers.
18. All styles of reverse ape hangers.
19. Fixing a flat tire with mushroom plugs instead of rubber cement and sticky strings.
20. Textile pants and textile jackets.

This could be a useful thread, Blue!
Observation:
The synthetic oil leak might be coincidental to elderly seal failure. Trunks should not be used to transport sacks of Portland cement, collections of fishing weights or cases of high-caliber ammunition.

Contribution:
3. Preoccupation with resentments while entering a corner.

agree...synthetic oil is not a killer....old seals are the killer.  if your seals are good, no oil comes out.

4. failure to do regular brake system maint.  including yearly fluid flush and replacing the rubber hoses before they are 20 years old.

Tore my MCL last winter this way, zipping down a sandy farm lane on a dirt bike, turn the corner, road is flooded.  Not used to riding on sand, rear wheel locked up and low sided...  Should have been pissed of and ruminating OR enjoying the ride... not both.

Rotella synthetic has seemed to been good to my Brick so far though.

Assuming that 'sharp curve' warning signs don't apply to me because I'm on a brick. Sometimes that sign actually means, "This is a 90-degree dogleg, so slow f**cking down, you idiot!", which I learned last week when the road right-angled like a t-square and I found myself blowing right through it at 35mph and trying to decelerate on the pea gravel path that went straight. Fortunately, I didn't lose control and there was a path there, not 60 foot cliff.

In the future, though, I will take hairpin warnings more seriously.

Idiots texting or phoning while they should be looking. And thank god they have now banned using it. But when I first started riding, the council used to do road repairs and spread kitty litter sized grey gravel on the repair. Caught out a lot of motorcyclists including me twice on roads I used at least twice a day.

Riding with a helmet.  Causes and encases brain swelling.  No pressure relief and brain goes boom.

So if you have your brain removed you don't need a helmet. :hehehe

The longer it is since our last crash...the luckier we feel and the more complacent we get.

Filtering.  Stupidest thing you can do on two wheels.

Going around a vehicle that is stopped for a left turn at an intersection without slowing down.  I always assume there is a vehicle coming the other way who will be making a left turn.

Clearly you guys are too removed from the '70's chopper scene..........those handlebars are a favorite safety device, "Chopper Trapeze". It allows the rider to safely rotate up, over, and forward, in the event of a crash, clearing the vehicle, landing on his feet, so he can walk over to the driver who brake-checked to beat the shit out of him. I needed those last week on I-85. But WARNING, the "Chopper Trapeze" is of limited effectiveness on RV's and Semi's.

Never seen ape-hangers on a BMW. Until now...

And then there are reverse ape hangers.
