Wiring Question
« on: August 22, 2016, 11:18:12 AM »
I am troubleshooting a no-power issue on my 1991 K100.  Under the tank I found on connector with four wires, a brown and a black as far as I can tell through the melted insulation.  They traced directly into the handle bars through a small hole.  Are these for heated grips by chance?  If not, what then?

Going to post under a different topic on the no-power/no-start condition.

Thanks in advance........

Welcome, ordy.
They could be for bar-end signal lamps if your bike had those but they're most likely for heated grips. You haven't found a switch on your dash pad or bar indicating heated grip controls?

I have a switch, but I did not see where it connected with this particular harness.  But I also did not look very hard once I saw these wires went into the bars as my main problem is no power and these wires were not going to be anything to do with the issue.  I appreciate the reply.  Just need to verify items as I find them.  I am still working on searching this site for the trouble shooting guide I found on here way back that a member put together and as well as some schematics.  Once I exhaust that search, I need to post my issue and see where to go next with my meter.  Thanks again.

Are you searching for the guide, or with the guide?

I was searching for the guide, which actually rbm provided in one of the links above.  I had run across it when I was searching last spring for info on troubleshooting the cooling fan (which still is out since the starting problem reared its ugly head before I got to it).  Thanks for the assist.  Need to get in and begin tracing wires and see what I have going on.  Thought it was the side stand switch at first since it did turnover with all lights on, but then just lost all electrical power, which shouldn't be that switch. Also, It's done it before while riding. Just shut down. But then give it a few seconds even while coasting and I'd get electrical power back and start it. This time though, it never came back. Key on and I get a dull ABS light and no power.  So I'm thinking ground wire loose or deteriorated.  But all grounds that I've found look sound and fuses all intact.  So then looked for loose connectors and all seem fine.  So next is tracing wires, thus the guide that had some simple schematics.  But the liebarry link is even better.  Going to try to get busy this weekend.  Thanks for the info.

As requested, I am following up on this post.  I was able to locate the schematics finally and began with the obvious, and that was the ignition switch.  With no power with the exception of a faint ABS light, it had to be one of three things:  a bad ground, ignition swith, or power shed relay.  If those three are intact, then I would have gotten at least lights and would have been able to move on to the kill swith and then the fuel pump relay, and then the starter relay.  So in checking the ignition switch, I first read resistance, in which I got a couple of ohms.  Not good. Voltage coming into the switch was good.  Hooked up the connector and got no voltage coming thru the swtich.  Got online and found another person that had found a corroded switch.  I removed the farings and fairing support bracket and removed the ignition switch assembly. Using a jeweler's screwdriver, I removed the grub screw holding the swith into the ignition key switch assembly and was able to pull the switch.  I popped it apart and of course springs went everywhere.  After finding them and inspecting the switch, it was full of corrosion.  I cleaned it up really well and reassembled.  After reassembly I checked resistence and next to no ohms.  Reassembled key switch assembly and plugged it in and all was well.  I do not have any pics of the switch while disassembled, but only of the switch itself.

  Thanks for the followup! For those intending to do this procedure, this is a link to ignition switch cleanup photos.
