Author Topic: Mounting Emgo Trunk on K75 (Read 9277 times)

I'm looking at an Emgo Trunk for my '95 K75. It comes with a mounting plate which I could probably attach to the stock rack but the stock rack is mounted at an angle. I would prefer to have the trunk mounted level. How have you guys mounted these?

I had some aluminium plate folded, at a angle low for the front and higher for the rear. Made them out of cardboard and worked out the angles and had a metal shop cut and fold them. They bolt to the OEM rack with 6mm screws. The front plate will have to have a curve filed into it to conform with the tail piece. I had them do three sets, one for a mate and two for me. I still have a spare set around I will try to find and post a picture.

Martin,
How much weight will the tail piece/stock rack support? My rack is bolted to the plastic tail piece just behind the seat. My trunk will mostly be used for extra groceries or my FF helmet when parked in unfamiliar places. I always lock the side boxes when leaving the cycle parked--anywhere. I'm thinking some 1" wide steel plating will work to raise the back of the stock rack, then I can attach the trunk mounts to the stock rack.

Mate has a top box twice the size of mine carries heaps of groceries no problems. Mine is bolted to an OEM rack have carried heaps of stuff in it camping gear, food and tools again no problem. Just don't get carried away.

Martin, or anyone, how wide is the base plate for the trunk? I was hoping to have my bracket(s) made by the time the trunk arrives. Also, what type mounting hardware comes with one of these trunks?

Plastic base plate is 220 mm wide 230 long but mine is a Shad. Should come with bolts to mount it to the plates. Aluminium brackets are both 160 mm wide, front bracket 30mm high by 70mm length rear 100mm high by 70 mm length. Make them out of cardboard first and check.

Martin, I had not planned to have my trunk mounted quite as high as yours. Shouldn't have any problems lowering it about 19mm if all goes well.

You can't really lower it at the front and if you want to make it level you will have to go that high at the rear. At the heights I made it, it looks fine on my bike. But whatever tickles your pickle or floats your boat.

The vendor stated the Emgo Portable Lift Off Trunk (#72-32440) has a footprint of 16.5" W and 12" long. The mounting plate was quoted at 15.5" W and 11.5" long. I wished it were smaller. The pics shown on the web are somewhat misleading. One vendor I asked the measurements of the plate said the dimensions were not listed. Motorcycle Superstore quoted me the above figures.

Thus, by mounting it to the stock rack with brackets the trunk will have a 4" overhang, either on the back of the seat or the tail light. Or, I could split the difference. I'll just have to wait until it arrives to do the brackets to accommodate the quick release mounting plate. Another fun project!

Have you got a low seat or a high seat, it will make a difference as to whether you can lift your seat. If you have a high seat make sure you can at least lift the seat with the box removed.

My seat is a low profile and the release is in the front of the seat, just lift up the nose and the rear slides forward out of the tabs that hold the rear of the seat in place.

:2thumbup: Mine has the side hinge hence the reason for mounting further back. Please post pics when you have it mounted.

Not trunk related, but did you cycle come with a fairing or did you retrofit it from another model?

I've had the Emgo on my Ural for a couple years, really like it and it has held up well. Especially for $70 or so. The large mounting plate gives many mounting options, and the quick release works great. The box overhangs the plate so I never notice it, but on a K it would mount considerably higher so you could see the plate easier. Much better box than BMW's 22 litre, but not as iconic.

I plan to do about the same thing as Martin did on his K75 so the trunk will be level rather than on a slant. Just waiting on the trunk kit to determine how long my support arms will need to be in order to mount the big base plate.
