Please tell me what '93 K1100rs #670 is called
« on: July 22, 2016, 12:33:53 PM »
Talked to Color rite a few minutes ago. Their site stops before I get to 1993, so called them. He did try, but said that BMW #670 didn't show up in his system. He would look further if he had a NAME. Honestly, the name I have heard for 670 is Classic Black. That does not sit well with me as the color has a "green" shade in there deep down. Is '93 670 called something else?  I did look at the Tech page on paint here, and it doesn't cover '93 models. Pretty much everything about Paint is a real PITA.......

Classic Black Metallic, according to this pretty reliable resource...

Maybe you were giving them the Paint Scheme, not the Paint Code, that's why Colorrite couldn't help you. The Paint Scheme is the code that gives the base coat as well as any other ancillary colors, i.e. pinstriping etc. The Paint Code is the actual color. For instance, the color code on my cowling is 704 but that corresponds to the paint code 342 as shown under 'Grays' on the chart linked below:

http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/paintcodes/greys.htm

So try again with Colorite maybe or another source, giving them the code and name rather than scheme designation.

Good luck...

Hey,

Thanks for all the info on here. My '92 K1100RS is up for a respray. I have been looking for the wrong code all this time (670), and not the correct 162. And yes, mine has that green tinge to it too, which I'm desperate to keep; Love it!

I'm still a bit confused as to the 670. Does the 670 give the 162 the green tinge? Are the 162 / 506 /656 / 670/ 640 /679 / 709  different shades / hues of Classic Black? Any help would be welcome

All the best,

Beats me. The only help I can offer is use the color code not the scheme code when try to match paint color by code. A hue is the result of a blend of shades into one color; a scheme is how objects of different colors are combined in a presentation. The frame, headlight bucket and cases on my bike are not the same color as the tank, the rear cowl and the battery covers but together the are the stock color scheme.

Oops, part of my question didn't come out in the original posting, so here goes again:

Thanks, Laitch.

The only reason I really want to get this Code / Scheme thing nailed down is that I met another K1100RS rider the other week. His, so he said, was Classic Black, original and not resprayed, 670 under the seat, but his bike didn't seem to have the green tint. Just a metallic black, which I don't want.

Thanks,

Wal.
