K100RS - Seat no longer opens

Well this is an odd one:

Been happily putting many miles on my new (to me) 1991 K100RS over the last few weeks... but this morning I woke up to find that my seat no longer opens.

Troubleshooting performed:
• I've removed the side panel and can see the locking mechanism. It's not locked.
• I can manually push the locking mechanism up to lock it and the key does indeed unlock with no issue.

Any ideas as to why this little bugger is now stuck shut? I've got all sorts of goodies in my under-seat-compartment that I'd love continued access to haha.

The lock post needs adjustment. With one hand, lift on the seat with semi-he-manly pressure, pound on the edge of the seat above the lock with the side of the closed fist of your other hand. During this operation, keep the button depressed with your third hand.

No dice :( ... I'm likely going to need to take it to a shop I assume?

That depends. An investment of at least 120 additional minutes of filling that lock and its perimeter with penetrant, repeatedly pushing on the cylinder like a passenger working the EMERGENCY button while trapped in an elevator with Trump and Clinton, tapping out the drum break from Surfin Bird on its housing with a rubber mallet, banging on the seat edge with the heal of a hand, shifting the seat forward and rearward while pushing the cylinder and prying at the seat, cursing, hymn singing, farting and drooling all at the same time might be appropriate at this juncture. Suddenly, a push of the button and BINGO! It lifts. When it opens, pay yourself $160.00.

There may be an elegant solution out there and somebody will come forward with it to have mercy on you, but there is always the shop.

Although this condition might wind up at a shop, I'll try to explain what I reckon is happening.

Attached is a photo of the interior of the locking mechanism. The seat has a post attached to it. The end of that post is shaped like a stirrup. When the seat is closed, the post descends into the lock where the stirrup engages the scooped side of a strap that then holds it down. When the lock button is pushed, it engages the strap assembly at the bottom, disengaging the strap from the stirrup. Doing that enables the seat to be lifted. Some condition has interrupted that process and that's what all the jostling is about—getting the strap arm to swing and disengage from the post stirrup. Hopefully this is just a case of not knowing when the button is locked then simply unlocking it correctly and pushing it.
