WTB Speedo
« on: July 11, 2016, 01:44:44 PM »
Looking for Speedo only or whole instrument cluster for a good deal. i only need the speedo section so if you have a cluster where only the speedo works, lets talk.
i have a bike with some electrical gremlins that i still cant put my finger on, it apparently shot my speedo. not knowing thats what did it, i put my other Ks cluster on and now the speedo doesnt work on it either. go figure.  :mbird

There appear to be three K100 ones on ebay, but not cheap:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=bmw+k75+instrument&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xbmw+k100+instrument.TRS1&_nkw=bmw+k100+instrument&_sacat=0

yea i've been checking ebay, but that place is a price gouger for sure & i havent really seen anything worth getting

If your rear drive's speed sensor is shot or its connection with the speedometer is compromised, kylemb, getting another speedometer isn't going give you a different result. Have you ruled that out?

Was the replacement you tried verified to be functioning before it was installed?

yea i have two k100s. a black 85 RT and brown 88 LT. both bikes speedos were working. the brown bike's speedo stopped working when i replaced the loom. i didnt think about a short so i put the *working* black bike speedo on the brown bike and still no speedo. when i put the black bike's speedo back on the black bike, it no longer worked. so im about 95% sure theres an short in my brown pos.

Your thinking is that the circuitry in the speedos is being fried by a defect in the wiring but you haven't yet found that defect?

yea i've known there are gremlins in the brown bike for some time. they were there before i put the new loom on. im assuming they are somewhere in the relays. i haven't isolated the short in the brown bike yet, no. im just about tired of messing with it to be honest. at this point i just want a working speedo on my black bike so i can enjoy it. im not 100% sure its a short, but having it work one minute and then putting it on another bike and now it doesnt work, is pretty conclusive evidence, to me, that it got fried on the brown bike. so, im getting a new one for old blacky, ride her, and enjoy the rest of the summer.
wait for gremlin hunting season when its colder.

Thanks for indulging me, kylemb. Your final strategy is eminently sensible. Life is short but the roads are long and seductive. Ride them while you can.  :2thumbup:

well i figured you were trying to stop me from doing something stupid like putting a working speedo on a bike i think has a short in it. nothing will be going on the brown bike until i figure its mess out. but my black bike is about to rejoin the flock of flying bricks & i figured if i'm going to be cruising at altitude i might as well get some stock airplane instrumentation to go along with the thrills.  :riding:

I have a Speedo/Tach Unit off a 1989 K100LT. I haven't listed it in my post yet but I'm looking to get $120 plus shipping for it.
