Try getting a quote on the fibreglass repair and paint. I had a similar garage drop it, turned out nearly as cheap getting a bike repair shop to do the repair and paint than it would to buy the material and do it myself.    http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,7643.msg53687.html#msg53687

2 of the 4 "hard points" where the steel support attaches to the fiberglass cowl have pulled loose. They would be my concern if trying to fix this one.

A good fibreglass worker can achieve miracles. However you may need to ask around, and get a few quotes. The more information you get, the better you are armed to work out the good from the bad.

I have the top portion of the fairing from my '85 RS.  100% compatible with yours.
