"Put 12v + to pin 30 and 86.  Put ground to pin 85 and one side of the horn.  Connect the other side of the horn to pin 87.  The horn should blow."

The horn blows in this configuration.

I have dissected the sub-harness that goes to horns, to look at the ground juncture and it is solid.  I have tested each pair of horn leads with a turn indicator bulb connected through a motorcycle battery, and each pair lights.

So what the "F" is wrong with my bike?

When installed in the bike do you have 12v from pin 85 to pin 86 with the horn button pressed?  You should be able to hear the horn relay click.

If yes.  Do you have 12v from pin 30 to ground with or without the horn button pressed?

If yes.  Do you have 12v from pin 87 to ground only with the horn button pressed?

If yes to all of the above you have shown that your horn button, horn button wiring, and horn relay are working properly.

If no to any of the above, please get back with details.

When I use the term from to I mean to put one meter lead on the from and the other meter lead on the to in my instructions.

Make all of the about tests with the horn hooked up and the horn relay plugged in.

Issue is fixed.

The diagram I was referring to was WRONG- I was troubleshooting the wrong relay.

Luckily I had a spare that I thought was bad, that was used in the testing, but apparently it is good.  I left the newer one in the middle alone, then swapped my used one for the outermost relay which is THE HORN/FAN relay.

HONK! HONK!

No wonder the mysteries.

Thank you ALL.

Hi,

Looks like I'm having a similar problem with my LT -94.
Tried what you recommended - Kioolt - and looks like i don't have any 12v from pin 87 to ground with the horn button pressed.
Do you have a any idea on how i could potentially fix this!

Thankyou in advance!

- Check for voltage at pin 30 with ignition on.  If not there, then check fuse 7 and replace if burnt out.
- Check that pin 85 has 12V without the horn button being pressed and about 0V when horn button is pressed (with ignition on).
If pin 85 doesn't go to ground potential, then check the left hand controls connector for proper connections.  Clean the contacts with cleaner like Deoxit.
- Check ground connections to frame for both the horns and horn button.  Clean with a contact cleaner.

If after all this, no problem is found, the replace the relay.

Hi rbm,

thank you for such a fast response!

1. I have voltage at pin 0 with ignition on.
2. I also get the "click" when pressing the horn and the fuse is installed.
3. But i do not get 12V's at pin 85 without the horn button being pressed. I have nothing on pin 85 no matter if the horn is pressed or not.

I checked the left hand control connector and all looks well, also added some Deoxit for good measure.
I have to say that im not 100% sure where to find the ground connector for the horn and the horn button, any chance you could give me a hint?

thank you in advance!!

Your description makes it sound like the horn relay is bad.  Try swapping the horn relay with the fan relay and see if the problem moves with the relay.  Check out this page to help you identify the relays if you don't know the relay box layout: http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=536.0  Yours should match the diagram for ABS I bikes in the second post.

Hi,

Have tried that and the relay is fine.
I tried to connect the horn's ground directly to the ground point under the tank and the horn works, so feels like the issue should be with the ground that is connected to the horn. Do you know what ground point this is?

Looked in my Clymer and online and have not had any luck in finding out yet.

This youtube that Laitch posted on my issues thread helped me understand relays.

Thank man, this video is great, already watched it actually when trying to figure this out :)

But i think the issue is with the ground as all works when i run a "new ground" and connect it to the ground point under the tank.
Does anyone know what ground the original horn cable is connected to?

My issue turned out to be the 4 pin tank connector, had power going in, none coming out. spliced a trailer connector in and the pump works. Hope you issue is as easily resolved.

Have you removed all the wires from that ground point then cleaned and inspected all their terminals and the attachment point itself?

Hey,

I fixed it by just making a new ground and connecting it to the connector under the tank.
Works like a charm now. Thankyou all for the quick answers, been really helpful!

Hope you have a great day!
