Change coolant without taking off gas tank?
« on: June 29, 2016, 02:35:59 AM »
Is it possible to do coolant change without taking off the tank? I want to do a flush of the cooling system, and that involve changing fluids a couple of times with rides in between. Seems like a lot of work to remove the tank every time for it. Can I just undo the hose clamp on the top left of the radiator and fill the fluids in from there?

You don't have to completely remove the tank just remove the two clips and just lift it and move to allow access to the filler. But to completely remove  it, requires you to remove the two hose clip one for the supply and one for the return.  If you wait until you are low on fuel it is easier.

Hey Martin, is it the clips that hold the tank in the rear side? Boy, talking about bad timing. I just had to fill up the tank today too. Jee haha.

Yes the two clips on the rear of the tank, they can be a bit fiddly I made up a piece of wire with a small hook. Once you remove them just lift up the back of the tank and slide to the rear. When you put the tank back put a smear of rubber grease on the pins it helps them to slide into the rubber grommets.

Nightwolf I forgot you also have the infamous four pin connector for the electrics in the tank. Good opportunity to clean it( Deoxit), I also use dielectric grease on it. Some people discourage its use but I have never had a problem using it.

I just did this and always remove the tank as it allows me to inspect, clean and wipe down the wiring harness lightly with armor all to keep the wires on these old bikes supple.
