Intermittent and Dimly Lit Alternator Warning Light
« on: June 27, 2016, 10:51:18 PM »
Just got back from a night ride for a milkshake. I noticed a very dim red glow from my alternator warning light. It would go out and then come back a little.  It got worse when I applied front and rear brake (from bulb load, I'm assuming). Is my alternator telling me something? What does the brain trust think the source of this problem is...please. And, yes, I did search the library and the other sources of "whack". Any help appreciated. This is the first time Heinz ('86 K100RT - 63,xxx miles) has ever given me a reason to doubt her reliability. Thanks in advance!

Until the brain trust answers, kris, I'll offer up this. It's your alternator light that is trying to tell you something. It may be telling you that the alternator wire connections and grounds should be checked or cleaned, or it could be telling you to tighten the alternator mounting bolts, or it could be telling you that the alternator itself needs cleaning or replacement, or it could be telling you about this item you missed in your search, or it could be telling you it has a poor connection in the instrument panel, or it could be telling you that you should only get milkshakes in daylight,

Thanks Laitch....guess I should have made it a beer instead of a shake! I'll continue to check on this. It's odd that it just started happening. Connections, since I had the bike apart within the last 18 months and even replaced monkey nights within last 12 months, should be good.

If the alternator light behavior you saw was at idle I wouldn't worry about it.
