Wont start on first press, but second
« on: June 27, 2016, 04:49:57 PM »
Hello :)

First off i would like to say that English is not my main language.

I have some issues with my bike, but it takes some explaining to get to the problem ;-)
My bike - K100LT 1989 - 56.000km

I drove a long trip last night, and suddenly my bike wouldn't tick over, it stalled and i couldn't get it to start at all.
I left it for 30min and came back to see if it would start. It wouldn't at first, but then i tried with the choke on, and it started!
It still didn't tick over, but i could adjust the tick over speed with the choke.
All the way home the bike ran very bad, it wouldn't rev above 4000rpm.

The next morning it took 3 tries of pressing the starter button for a period of approx. 4 seconds.
I got it started and it ran fine all the way to work, no problem with 4000rpm limit.
 - Same starting problem after work.
After work i decided to change the fuelfilter, as i read that this could very well be the problem.
It didn't help, it still won't start on the first press of the starter, as it did 2 days ago...

The current solution to my problem = Press the starter once for 2sek, let it go until the fuel pump goes off and press it again then it starts right away.

By the way, when i turn the key, the fuel pump doesn't come on, it comes on when i press the starter though.
(My friends K1100RS 94 runs for 2sek when he turns the key)

Welcome, alex-wilson. How long have you owned the bike? How many miles have you ridden it?

First, try this, then try that and the other one.

Re the pump running when the key is turned on is a feature of the Motronic fuel systems on the 1100 that the 75's and 100's don't have.
So don't expect yours to do that with the key, only when the start button is pressed.

Thank you very much for your reply!
I have owned the bike for 2 weeks. And have ridden approx. 400km.
I have replaced the connector for the fuel pump already, because it gave me problems after i had the tank off.
I will try the two other solutions after work today!

Thanks for clearing that up! I had hoped that was the answer.

Okay.. So… On the way to work the bike sort of gave up on me..

When I started it, it still had the 2-button-press starting problem. But this time it wouldn’t really rev when in gear, in neutral and with the clutch depressed it revved fine. (This sounds like an earth/ground problem to me).
I tried the backing while in 3rd trick, and checked the connector for the big silver box (forgot the name)
And at the end it ran so bad that I decided to leave it half way to work.

When I turn the switch to the ON POSITION (1984 k100) the pump turns on. Before I hit the start button.
