K1100RS ABS question
« on: June 12, 2016, 12:41:09 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have read that basically after 1993 the Abs system mounted on our bikes is the so called ABS II, that is lighter and better overall than the ABS I..
I have recently purchased a K1100RS '93 model equipped with Abs but I don't know which generation of it my bike has..
So my question is: how can I understand if I have an ABS I or an ABS II system?

Thanks in advance! Lamps :)

greetings madmax91...

abs1 93 and earlier abs2 94 and later... in most cases... not all...

so if you want to know what you got and what parts fits your moto...

1st... getts the last 7 digits of your vin and put in here to see what your moto really is...

2nd... then pick your moto here...

3rd... after you figger out the exact part number put it in here to see what all motos it fits...

4th... then put your questions in here and  search it...

5th... make your post... include the part numbers you looked up... include screen prints to demonstrate you doing the minimum...

this one looks to have abs1 circled in red...

Hi johnny :)

Yea I didn't want to load again another post with the same pic, sorry..so basically the absence of that "whisky barrel with the script ABS on it" would tell that it is indeed an ABS 1 rather than ABS 2 on an equipped abs system, I understand..curious, because while looking on the net for some used RSs, some owners were stating that they were equipped with abs but the absence of that barrel made me suspicious and make me avoid the transaction..I could have asked here before buying it but it's ok, better than nothing :)

I don't know about your country and the rest of the world but here in Italy it was quite difficult to find a good-shaped RS, with few km, original parts and dark color (mine has only 57000km and is supposed to be equipped with bmw alarm too!) so I still consider it a good purchase (but abs2 would have been great :)) )

Thanks for help, ciao :)

The barrel (pump)  means it HAS ABS1.

no pump there is ABS2.

Thanks mlytle :)

maybe off topic, but this ABS I does really work? I mean, yes it is a very first generation, but does it really makes the difference between tasting the bitter dark asphalt and coming back home safe and sound?

Yes it does.  A bit primitive compared to modern abs, but it works.  I have tested mine a few times. ...intentionally.

Go try yours.  Find a sandy or wet road and try to lock them up.  Seriously.

I'll try as soon as I'll put my hands on it but I don't hide the fact that I'm very afraid to scratch it!! it is going to be my very first abs experience on a bike, I'll let you know the results and impressions...:))

Thanks again mlytle, ciao!

b4 trying it in the sandy wet... get yourself on a long straight flat stretch... start at 30mph... back brake full on... you should hear it and feel it pulse... after that do the same thing with the front...

then try it at 50mph and 70mph... once you get that behind you... practice with both back and front full on... you will get the hang of it... then try it in the sandy or wet... then go getts you some yeeeeehaaaaa...

Great suggestion to start with the back brake, I completely forgot about its existence :))  I almost never used it on the Gs (drum was too stiff), nor on my previous bikes (Husqvarna Sms 125->too powerful / Honda Rebel 125->too weak), what a great jump into the future it is going to be!! :))

Thanks johnny!

Ps.: I used to change the rubber tubes for the front brake with aeronautical type ones on the Gs, would you recommend this mod as well on the Rs? I could definitly spot the difference back then, no more fading on the front and costant performance through the day..

Laitch I used to ride in the Vic High Country yearly Skeeter Grimshaw 2 day ride. Had to use 90cc Honda Postie bikes with a split hi-lo box. Had up to 30+ bikes last time I did it . And accompanied by a Landcruiser beer truck with an esky the size of the tray.
