Late cluster on early bike, fuel light

So I put a new cluster on my 85 k100 to fix my odometer. Got a decent deal on a nice one off feebay.

Plugged in the new gage and all is pretty good, except my single gas light is on vs my two lights from original.

Other than swapping guts of the two clusters, what can I do to fix the light issue?

If your new gauge is the lower photo, the light left of the fuel light is the "choke on" light. They aren't connected on the later models, if yours is connected and working, it should light when you move the "choke' lever to one of the "on" positions. It's not needed by people who pay attention to the lever's position, and the higher revs when you pull in the clutch lever are a sure sign to close the "choke." Is the fuel light on but you have a full tank? Your problem is not clear to me.

Yes, my fuel light, one next to the gas pump, is on. Comes on after a few seconds after starting.

Both lights worked correctly on the old gage.

I feel left out here. I see you've got a choke light on the right side. I don't have any choke light at all anywhere. What was the function of two lights on your old gauge. Did they both light at the same time or was one to tell you that you'd better stop and start walking? If the connections on the new instrument cluster haven't been thoroughly cleaned, I'd start there. After that, checking the internal connections would be next.

1st thing id do is getts the oem part number off the old unit and the new unit... if not the same id getts on the max fiche and see what the new one fitts... they aints all the same you know... late cluster early moto and all...

is your moto abs... you may have to replace the entire wiring harness...

Early bikes had two fuel warning lights one at approx 7Lt one at approx 4Lt. This was reduced to one fuel warning light in later models.

Just plug it in and ride. One light or two, it's not at all reliable. I keep track of fuel with my trip odo.

i gotts my one and only fuel light to come on when i gotts 1 drop of fuel left in the tank...

if i had 3 lights it would go like this... 3 drops left 1st light... 2 drops left 2nd light... 1 drops left 3rd light...

fecking fuel lights... who uses them anyway...

because they added a fuel gauge...

Mine failed a long time ago and I don't miss it.
You should get 350km,217.48 miles before you need to plan on walking.Anyone else figured this?
Mine stutters for a coupel of miles just before it runs dry...My odo failed a few years back.
Buying new you get philosophical about these things,after all I'm crapping out as well.

The light you are referring to is the ABS light on my '89.  It flashes to show fault in the ABS. It should be a straightforward circuit, as the ABS "brain"/relay trigger it.   Not an expert here :bmwsmile, but it could be as simple as a wire swap...if, you could figure out which wire.   There are schematics here somewhere :eek:

It was a common complaint at the dealerships amongst owners that a fuel light "was always on" and extremely annoying.  The first one came on when the tank was half full.  It didn't help that the first light was bright yellow.  In response to complaints, dealerships removed the first bulb from the cluster.

Next mod on the early version low fuel level warning system was that all components for the 7 L
circuit was removed (and the delay time changed) from the PCB.
